Romantic Medieval Village House
Discover the real France in this wonderful ancient village, staying in La Grande Maison which is over 500 years old. This charming maison situated in a tiny laneway in the centre of the village sleeps four and has been comfortably renovated without losing its fantastic character and charm. La Grande Maison occupies the first and second floors of the house. There are two large bedrooms, one on each floor, with very comfortable queen beds. All linen and towels are provided. There is a toilet/wash basin room on the first floor and a large bathroom with a bath, separate shower recess and separate toilet on the second floor. The fully equipped kitchen has gas cooking and a full size refrigerator. The huge lounge/dining room has TV, books and music. The courtyard is a lovely place to enjoy a meal and a local wine. Our other listing, Charming Medieval Cottage occupies the ground floor, and shares the courtyard and laundry. It is possible to rent both places for a larger group at a reduced price. The village has a few shops, a bar and a boulangerie close to the house. There is also a weekly farmers market. There are marvellous restaurants scattered around the local area. Because there are very few tourists the food is genuine and cheap. We love Herisson because it is not touristy like so much of France. The village has not been spoiled by industry, so it looks much as it might have been 500 years or more ago. Herisson is surrounded by farms and villages as well as the Troncais Forest which is the largest oak forest in Europe. There are many ancient chateaux and churches to visit. The quiet lanes around the village are marvellous for walking or cycling. Free parking is available at either end of the laneway, just a few metres from the house. Please note that there are some very old, steep stairs to the second floor bedroom which may not be suitable for the infirm or very young.
