The Studio, Unique Timber Eco-Home
The Studio is an open plan yet cosy wooden eco building with grass roof, adjacent to the Green Wood Chairs workshop, where Alison Ospina makes her natural wood furniture and teaches courses over the summer months. It is in a very quiet and scenic location, only 5 minutes drive from the market town of Skibbereen. Recently refurbished with tasteful, comfortable furnishings, including several pieces specially made by Alison for the studio. Stay warm on cold nights by the wood burning stove. Located in the grounds of The Wooden House, where your hosts live. The Studio is a light and airy energy-efficient, hand-built timber structure surrounded by greenery, made in the Segal style, with eco insulation, double glazing and a grass roof. Parking is available directly outside. A few small steps lead you up to the front door, which has a porch area where coats and boots can be stored. Through the french doors you will enter the main space, with bedroom/living area to the left and kitchen/dining area to the right and the wood burning stove in the centre. Logs and kindling are supplied, with extra available for an additional charge. There is a comfortable double bed with new mattress and quality bedding, next to a two-seater upholstered green wood couch, coffee table and DVD player with screen. We can provide a curated selection of DVDs/Blurays for you to enjoy during your stay. There is a wardrobe with hangers and a chest of drawers to put your clothes away in. The kitchen is brand new and fully equipped with sink, electric hotplates, mini oven, fridge, kettle and toaster. Tea, coffee, olive oil, salt and pepper are provided, along with all the plates, bowls, cups, cutlery and pans you may need. There is a dining area with chairs where can enjoy your meals or morning coffee. The Studio features some special artistic touches, such as beautiful handmade stained glass window and carefully selected local ceramics for everyday use. The bathroom has a small sink, tiled shower, heated towel rail and ultra-modern odourless composting toilet. The location is perfect for excursions around West Cork and exploring the Wild Atlantic Way. Guests have access to the Studio and also car parking area, but may walk around entire grounds, visit Greenwood Chairs workshop by appointment, feed our horse, Summer, carrots and maybe even meet our dog, Evie! The Wooden House is approx. 50 metres away from the Studio and either José or Alison are usually around at any time, as they both work from home. We will be here to answer your questions, offer recommendations and help with anything you may need during your stay. A colourful, bustling Farmers Market takes place in Skibbereen every Saturday morning where you can find for sale a wide array of hand made crafts and wonderful fresh artisan foods, while listening to live music and sipping freshly made coffee. Skibbereen town itself has several historic walks , leaflets can be found in the Heritage Centre. Enjoy a walk up Knockomagh Hill, overlooking Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve. Follow the nature trail to the top and experience one of the most beautiful views in West Cork. The Studio is reached down an unpaved "boreen". Caution is advised when driving when driving down if you are not familar with it. Reaching the Studio by public transport is difficult, and Skibbereen is approx. 1.5 miles away - a pleasant 25 minute walk along back roads.
