There are many quiet lanes, by-ways, woods, fells, stream & river sides to explore straight out of The Loft's door. This area of outstanding natural beauty boasts Loweswater (the Lake) about 2.5 miles away, Ennerdale Water and Crummock Water, both about 4 miles away, and Buttermere, Bassenthwaite and Wastwater just beyond. Here you can enjoy a leisurely lakeside stroll or perhaps a more energetic walk over the local fells, so beloved by Alfred Wainwright, who wrote the famous Wainwright Guides to The Lake District. For those who prefer to see the landscape on horseback, pony trekking is available at Bradley’s Riding Centre on Cold Fell above Ennerdale. Boat hire is available at Crummock (National Trust) and on Derwentwater at nearby Keswick. Keen climbers will find many good outdoor rock faces in West Cumbria. Honister Slate Mine offers a guided Via Ferrata, along the hair-raising old route that miners would have used. There are also two good climbing centres in Keswick, which cater for adults & children and offer guided outdoor climbing & ghyll scrambling (weather permitting), and a ‘Clip and Climb Centre’ in Maryport. Picturesque St Bees Head Heritage Coast, reveals long stretches of sandy beach as the tide goes out and is just 11 miles away. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, known locally as 'La’al Ratty', is a 7 mile narrow gauge steam railway that runs through some of the most stunning countryside from Dalegarth Station near Boot in the valley of Eskdale to Ravenglass on the coast. As well as the many delightful rural Inns and Pubs, the local towns of Cockermouth, Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport and further afield, Penrith and Carlisle, provide shops, supermarkets, theatres, cinemas, night clubs, cafes, restaurants, museums, art galleries and other Visitor Attractions. The Loft is in rural West Cumbria. Although public transport links the local towns it does not venture up to Lamplugh Green. To see the area at its best, you will need a vehicle to get here and to tour around the local beauty spots unless you're walking or cycling the 'Coast to Coast' routes. The Loft is accessed via a staircase. Lamplugh is a beautiful rural location.
