It is between the two rivers, Gartempe and Vienne and close to many tourist attractions including Le Dorat and L'Isle Jourdain; because of its easy access to the Route Nationale (N147) it is also an idea location for venturing further afield. Getting to the area is easy with flights from many UK airports into Limoges (55km) and Poitiers (66km); the nearest trains at Le Dorat (15km) have links to services to Poitiers train station where you have TGV connections to Paris, Bordeaux, London & Brussels. Visit Le-Dorat (Limousin, France) The town of Le-Dorat is situated in the north-west corner of the Haute-Vienne department, a little to the north of Bellac and about 40 kilometres north of Limoges. Although it is only a small town there are various sights of interest to visitors, most notably the collegiale church of Saint-Pierre. Visit Bellac (Limousin, France) Bellac is situated to the north-west of the Haute-Vienne department of Limousin, near the border with the Poitou-Charentes region. It is a small market town with a long history based around the leather tanning industry that was important here during the Middle Ages. Each historical period has left its mark on Bellac in the form of places of interest for visitors. Visit Montmorillon (Poitou-Charentes, France) The small town of Montmorillon is towards the west of the Vienne department (which is itself in the western Poitou-Charentes region), in the gently rolling countryside about 45 kilometres east of Poitiers. Montmorillon is now classed as a 'Town of Art and History' to reflect its focus on preserving its historical heritage. It is the centre of the historic town along the banks of the Gartempe river where the town is most attractive and where your visit will be centred. Visit Mortemart (Limousin, France) The village of Mortemart is situated in the north-west of Haute-Vienne, to the south-west of Bellac and north-west of Limoges. The village is within the region known as the 'Monts de Blond' and is officially classified as one of the 'most beautiful villages in France'. Visit Confolens (Poitou-Charentes, France) Confolens is located in the Charente department of Poitou-Charentes, to the north-east of Angouleme and north-west of La Rochefoucauld. It is an attractive town on the Vienne river, at its confluence with the Goire River, and surrounded by rolling pastoral countryside (the name Confolens comes originally from the word 'confluence'). Because it lacks major transport links Confolens is perhaps not usually high on the tourist trail, but if you are in the region there are several places of interest to visit in the town. Visit Lac de Saint-Pardoux, France Situated about 25 kilometres to the north of Limoges, the Lake of Saint-Pardoux is one of the most visited destinations in the Haute-Vienne department of Limousin. The lake is substantial in size, with a surface area covering more than 300 hectares (750 acres), and offers a wide range of facilities and activities to summer visitors. Start your visit at the Site de Santrop, at the main entrance to the lake. Here you can find a good choice of outdoor activities, from quiet walks around the edges of the lake to boating on the water, and from beaches around the edges of the lake to acrobatic tree adventure parks (accrobranche in French). Visit Oradour-sur-Glane (Limousin, France) Oradour-sur-Glane is a village and historic memorial site 25 kilometres to the north-west of Limoges, in the Limousin region of central France. History Before the second World War Oradour-sur-Glane was a small traditional French village centred around its church. The village gained its importance in French history when it was completely destroyed by the retreating forces of the German SS on the 10th June 1944. The destruction of the village also included the murder of all its 642 inhabitants (except a very few who managed to escape) and also some others who were just passing through the village. The murders were carried out for reasons that remain partly unclear, but were in part in retribution for the activities of the local resistance during the war; in part due to a confusion over which town was involved in these activities; and in part due to a sadistic German army officer*. There is a very readable account of the events here. The men of the village were all shot and the women and children burned to death in the church before the village itself was razed to the ground. Markets in and near Bussiere-Poitevine Montmorillon: market Wednesday (21km) Saint-Pardoux: market Wednesday (35km) Saint-Savin: market Friday (37km) Saint-Junien: market Saturday (38km) Le Blanc: market Saturday (46km) Limoges: market every day (50km) Poitiers: market Wednesday & Sunday & Saturday all day & Friday (59km) Saint-Gaultier: market Friday (60km) Although our home is detached, we do request our guests to respect the other residents of the hamlet.
