Escape to a wonderland of rural tranquility. The Bird House is perfect for a weekend getaway, Garden Route stopover or longer stay for touring the Overberg-Hermanus area. Nestled in its own private garden, the stylish suite offers a well-equipped kitchenette, cosy seating & table for eating/work. Relax in the private bird-filled garden, enjoy a braai & experience starlight quiet. Convenient proximity to wedding venues, wine & cheese farms & places for fine food. The Bird House is situated in a quiet road at the top of the heritage village of Stanford which is between the renowned whale & shark experience towns of Hermanus & Gansbaai. The suite (which is attached to the main house, but very private) has its own off-street parking, entrance & secluded outside area where you can relax & enjoy the abundant bird life that visits our garden & bird feeders. The space is a double volume room with choice of either two single or king size bed setup, en-suite shower / bathroom, cosy sitting area & table / work space to set up a PC (wifi available on request) or dine alfresco. A kitchenette area equipped with crockery, cutlery, kettle, toaster, small fridge & microwave allows for basic food prep / warming up of take-away or ready meals. Cooking can be done on a electric 2-plate stove, electric frying pan or on the braai. Stanford which is right on the banks of the Klein River, has a wide variety of things to do for those who love the outdoors including hiking/walking, canoeing/kayaking on the river or river cruises, weekend markets and visiting the beautiful beaches and town of Hermanus. The village is close to many wedding venues. Suite has off-street parking, own entrance and separate closed-in garden. Sara or Christine will be available throughout your stay to answer any needs. Stanford is a perfectly quaint country village which offers visitors the opportunity to just chill-out, or taste a piece of a country-life by joining the locals in their activities of weekly photo-walks, cycling, hiking, jogging, pilates, yoga or art classes! There are a number of excellent venues for food and drink. Visit a local beauty therapist for a facial or one of the close-by spa's for a full treatment. Information on weekly and upcoming activities will be found on the Stanford Tourism Information website or call the office during working hours. The village is set on the banks of the Klein River. If you love walking and nature, the beautifully kept walk-path called "Die Wandelpad" meanders through the village and down to the river along which many species of indigenous flora and birdlife can be experienced or book a boat trip down the river. For the more adventurous and athletic there is on offer kayaking or bicyle hire. Fun and interesting close-by venues to visit include the honey shop, local gin distillers, Birkenhead Brewery and Panthera big cat sanctuary. And for bird lovers, the village is ideally situated as a set off for day trips to see the many endemic species which occur in the Overberg including the Vermont salt pan, wheat fields, De Hoop reserve, Harold Porter Gardens, penguins at Betty's Bay, Rockjumpers in Rooielse and many others. Well, getting there - Stanford is accessible via the R43 through Hermanus or the R326 off the N2 via Caledon. As the road between Hermanus and Stanford is currently being upgraded there are stop and go's in place. For visitors travelling from Cape Town directly to Stanford, the Caledon route may be preferable to avoid the stop&go and roadworks. The Bird House is on the outskirt of the village, so walking to and from the local shops and restaurants is reserved for the fittest or cyclists. Happily driving around is a breeze - easy parking, no traffic! Guests are advised to bring bottled water - although the local supply is wonderfully natural, clean and perfectly safe (sourced from Stanfords own aquaduct) the high mineral concentrate does give it a unique taste! The village has a well-stocked OK Mini-mart at the entrance to the town which also offers locally sourced ready-made meals and meat, a Spar Tops bottle-store and many eateries. We recommend you stop off there on your way in for basic supplies and beverages you may need during your stay. Wine, cheese, bread and home-style pies are specialties of the region which has 10 wine-farms within a 15km radius, two cheese farms and the renowned Ou Meul for pies.
