Mistover
Mistover is nearly 100 years old. Originally the local schoolmaster's house, it was imaginatively restored and extended in 1980 by an artist, the owner, who is my aunt, who uses it as her country retreat. I have been holidaying in Mistover since I was very young. Its my favourite place. The rooms are quietly furnished in traditional country style. Mistover is nearly 100 years old. It has two acres of gardens and woods, straddling a small stream (dry in a hot summer), situated in Glengarriff Woods, one of Ireland's National park and nature reserves, with a magnificent view across a valley to a curtain of mountain peaks. There is little traffic as the road serves only a few local farms. In the distance cars can occasionally be seen making the climb to Barley Lake, a beauty spot saddled up in the mountains.Mistover is equidistant from Bantry & Kenmare, both 14 miles away. This is the very heart of West Cork, the choice of its mild climate, unhurried beauty, and multitude of quiet coves, with the Ring of Beara, immediately adjacent and the better-known Ring of Kerry, half an hour away. Mistover can accommodate a maximum number of 6-7 guests. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, toilet and walk-in airing cupboard. There is also a farmhouse-style dining room, with woodstove and TV. Nearby is a sitting room with open fireplace, as well as a spacious modern kitchen with a breakfast bar, oil-fired Rayburn stove, gascooker, microwave and fridge / freezer. A small conservatory lies off the dining room, and there is a garage, with access from the kitchen. The first floor comprises three bedrooms; Bedroom 1 with a double bed, wood stove and TV, Bedroom 2 with 2 single beds and Bedroom 3 with a large single bed. There is also a spacious bathroom with bath, shower cabinet, toilet and bidet on this floor. Bedroom 4 is located on the second floor, with 2 single beds for children in this large room, with a wash basin. Mistover has central heating throughout, a washing machine, telephone, TV, video, a herb garden and beautiful, clear, spring water from it's own deep well. Some visitors to Mistover are content to relax and enjoy the garden, nothing more energetic than exploring the varied shrubs and trees, or preparing a barbecue. If it rains the house has many rooms and comforts as well as books. There are a variety of forest, woodland and riverside walks, and 14 minutes by footpath to idyllic river bathing. The local village of Glengarriff is through the forest, 2.5 miles away, with post office, village shops and sea bathing. A few minutes more bring you to a secluded sandy cove.
