Greenlands Barn on the old River Tone navigation
Greenlands Barn is in a lovely quiet spot off the River Tone. From the doorstep you can walk along the river, go further onto the Somerset levels or do a circuit to the local pub in the next village. The barn is light and airy with a large kitchen diner & living room, king size bedroom, spacious bathroom, walled courtyard and private riverbank. There are mountain bikes and a 2-person canoe for use during your stay. Historic towns, countryside or just a rest by the wood-burning stove awaits you. The barn is part of an old farm which used to be part of the a system at Ham Lock. Coalharbour across the suspension bridge took in the coal, Ham Mills ground the flour and still has a working waterwheel, Ham Lock cottage controlled the lock and Old Ham Wharf Farm and the two barns were the front-of-shop for those purchasing flour or taking goods through the navigation with barges loaded from the Tone. You can see the remnants of this in the buildings and enjoy the riverside setting and abundant wildlife that has reclaimed the space. Guests have the barn, an enclosed courtyard garden, a sun patio and the riverbank to enjoy. The courtyard has outdoor seating for four, a huge parasol, a long bench and a really comfy hammock for two. There are two easy chairs on the sun patio which can also be moved down to the riverbank to sit and enjoy the sounds of the fish and watch the kingfishers dart about. The adjoining utility room has a tumble-dryer in addition to the washing machine in the barn and please feel free to use the washing line at the back of the house. The barn interior and exterior were newly decorated in 2020/21. It’s your holiday, so you’ll have the barn and spaces to yourself. You’ll see me pottering around, mainly doing a lot of grass-mowing or similar. If you’re lucky I’ll have some fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and courgettes for you from my veg garden across the lane. I’m not an early riser and apart from the occasional waft of funk & soul music (which you can use to pinpoint my location in the garden or acre across the lane), you’ll pretty much not hear me. I can answer any questions by phone, text, email, messenger. We are close to the Somerset Levels, Glastonbury, Street, Bath, Clarks Village Shopping, Bridgwater Carnival, The Quantocks, Exmoor, The Bridgwater to Taunton Canal so great area for wildlife and walking. We are local for the Kings College Cricket Festival, Somerset County Ground matches and just up the road from Taunton Rugby Club. If you are attending a local wedding at Maunsel House, Hestercombe, Huntstile Organic Farm, Mount Somerset, Woodlands Castle or any in the local villages I’m more than happy to drop you to the venue if I can and help arrange a taxi for your ride back. Taunton is within 3 miles and M5 junction 25 is 5-7 minutes away. Cycle route 33 passes the front door and the sound of bike tyres on tarmac is something you’ll get used to as many clubs cycle past the barn at the weekends having tackled the 13-bends downhill route from Knapp. Taunton train station is a 10 minute drive away, but please note there are no bus routes that pass the barn. To returning and new visitors alike - the internet speeds have improved! The marvel of 4G mobile broadband has arrived... So, you CAN watch Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube etc on the smart TV. You CAN use smart devices without fear of the revolving wheel....! As you’re on a riverbank I need to warn you about levels. There are steps up to the riverbank and then a slope down to the lower bank near the water. It’s not for those who are unsteady on their feet at all. This is the main reason I’ve not set the barn up for children, it’s really not suitable. The lower river bank near the river is wild planted, in the middle of this is a glade of grass and the area to launch the canoe out onto the river.
