In the beautiful West Wight, this substantial Victorian house offers a warm, relaxed and friendly atmosphere where guests can enjoy the spacious and tastefully decorated rooms and experience the stunning views from the many coastal paths. Ruskin Lodge offers guests a pleasant stay in comfortable rooms within this lovely late Victorian house. On arrival guests will be given keys to the house and their room to allow them free access during the day. Each room is well-equipped to ensure our guests feel at home and visitors are encouraged to ask if there is anything extra that they require. The small cove of Freshwater bay and beach is within a few minutes walk as is the Tennyson Trail – part of the heritage coast with unspoilt natural beauty and some stunning coastal views. Ruskin Lodge no longer accepts pets, although provision can be made for guide and hearing dogs. Please advise us in advance. The lounge, together will a collection of books and a Marshall and Rose grand piano are also available for use. On sunny days the balcony provides stunning views across the beautiful West Wight countryside. Guests are welcome to use the facilities of the house during the day, to facilitate this a key is provided for free access. The needs of guests are a priority and help and advice is always available. A wide variety of breakfasts are always available at Ruskin Lodge. We cater for all dietary requirements and will cook to order. The West of the Island is predominately rural. There is easy access to numerous beautiful walks. The area is steeped in the literary culture of the country, from Tennyson to Isherwood. The views from the nearby Tennyson Down are second to none. Located in the more tranquil western side of the Isle of Wight (known locally as the West Wight) Ruskin Lodge in Freshwater Bay is ideally situated for walkers, cyclists and families. If you choose to travel to the Island by car there are several ferry departure points to the mainland. Ruskin Lodge is just two miles from the Lymington to Yarmouth crossing. For foot passengers there is a taxi rank and bus stop at the ferry terminal. Southern Vectis buses offer rover and freedom tickets with special rates for children and groups. There are three bus stops close to the house. Within the vicinity can be found a number of pubs and restaurants all within easy walking distance, the bay also has a local shop and post office. Walking from Yarmouth to Freshwater Bay along the quiet estuary footpath is a very pleasant way to begin your stay on the Isle of Wight. For those guests wishing to explore the island on bicycles Ruskin Lodge can provide secure cycle storage. All guests are supplied with house and room keys allowing them access throughout the day. Guests can expect a warm welcome and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere at Ruskin Lodge. This late Victorian property has been sympathetically and tastefully furnished with many fine pieces in order to retain a period feel. Guest rooms are light, spacious and comfortable. Rooms are equipped with digital TV and a kettle for tea and coffee making. The beds have high quality pocket sprung or double sprung mattresses, all linen is high quality cotton. The Lodge can cater for up to six guests with family or triple rooms and en-suite or private bathroom options. We are happy to discuss and accommodate your requirements. The reception rooms include a cosy lounge and sun-filled conservatory with a selection of books for guests to borrow. Breakfast is served in the dining room which also accommodates the grand piano and some interesting works of art. Ruskin Lodge has two grand pianos, both of which are available for use by guests. Guests are welcome to relax in the garden and on the first floor balcony when they return from visits to the beach, Tennyson monument and other local places of interest such as Dimbola Lodge. The house was built and owned by a Dr Dabbs who was the family doctor for the Tennyson family. He was present during Alfred Lord Tennyson's final days and hours. His wife, Nina Laura Peets, may have had connections with the Reverend Dodgson ( Lewis Carol)
