Renovated Downtown elegance w/ city & lake view
Perched on a hill on the edge of the Medina, this is an area combining narrow lanes and traditional neighbourhoods with majestic old villas. The apartment, which was fully renovated in 2021, dates from the 1920s: staying here feels like inhabiting an earlier era. Quaint, with vintage furniture, and master craftsman-designed pieces. Ideal for writers, academics, couples, and those seeking to explore cities and inhabit a traditional neighbourhood seemingly frozen in time. This spacious and high-ceilinged apartment is part of a network of centrally-located properties in Athens, Beirut, Istanbul and Tunis, dedicated to reminding us of an earlier, kinder period of cosmopolitan coexistence in the Mediterranean. Built in the 1920s, it is 120m2 and composed of a bedroom, a study, a large living room, a storage room, a kitchen, a bathroom and three balconies. It is on the second floor of a hill rising over the Medina of Tunis and facing a hill atop which perches a Sufi shrine. Easily accessible from the center on foot and exquisitely quiet. For winter heating, it possesses a gas-powered central unit in the hall and plug-in mobile electrical bodies. For the summer, there are two a/c units: one in the living room and one in the bedroom. You have access to the whole house, including the storeroom. I am always available over email and so are cohosts Olfet and Dalia, one of whom is physically in Tunis in the event that something might come up. Montfleury is a charming, formerly aristocratic neighbourhood now known for its villas and student life. Staying here offers a unique mix of living both in the Medina and the colonial-era downtown. Two streets over from the apartment is Ali Trad, a busy street where you can always find taxis. You are strategically positioned for out-of-Tunis excursions between the louage bus-stations of Bab Alioua (for East and South Tunisia) and the station in Bab Saadoun (for the northern coast west of Tunis). This is a family-inhabited apartment building, where silent hours and cultural codes apply.
