Cosy Country Cottage, nr. The "Hundred Acre Wood"
Beautiful, tranquil location on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Hartfield. Stunning landscapes and forest walks on the doorstep. Lovely local farm shop and cafe only a few minutes walk away. Organic treats to welcome your arrival! Your room is a very spacious double/studio complete with Pooh Bear and Friends artwork, in-keeping with Hartfield's infamous history as the birthplace of these well known characters and the home of their creator, the prolific author and poet A.A Milne. This charming country cottage, dating back over 100 years, has plenty of unique character and natural, rustic charm. Lovingly decorated with a colourful array of antique and up-cycled furniture, with a hand crafted, vintage feel. Your room includes a working wood burner, comfortable two seater sofa, kitchenette area, well equipped with a mini-fridge, kettle, toaster, electric hob, tea/coffee making facilities and crockery/cutlery/utensils so you're able to make food and drinks in your room, should you desire. There are plenty of empty draws, shelves, hooks, and a hanging rail for your belongings, and the desk area has access to charging sockets and a super-fast fibre internet connection, free of charge. The exterior door opens out into a secluded cottage garden, full of roses in season, with a patio and furniture for outside dining. The interior door opens into a cosy communal dining area with a large, antique, wooden dining table and a second wood-burning stove (antique hanging rail above). The dining area leads into the airy, skylit galley kitchen, which you are also welcome to use during your stay. WC with a Victorian style suite including full size bath on the first floor. We have free off street parking on the premises for three cars. A car is not essential, however, as there is a lovely local farm shop and cafe, only a 5 min scenic walk away. They sell a wide array of great food and drink, and basic neccessites. I will usually be available to offer help and answer questions while you check in and if not I can be contacted via phone or email anytime. I'm also able to give my guests space if this is preferred and can offer contactless check in. This cottage really is 'in the sticks', tucked away on the outskirts of Hartfield and the Ashdown Forest, in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Tranquil, peaceful and immersed in the sights and sounds of the seasons. Listen out for the bleating lambs in spring, migrating geese or the neighbouring farm horses and ponies. A short walk away, just past the grand Bolebroke Castle grounds, you'll find access to public walking paths and forest exploration. Quite spectacular during the bluebell season in May! The Perry Hill Orchard Farm Shop (only a 5 minute scenic walk away) is renowned for it's delicious apple juice and cider! They sell a wide array of locally sourced fruit, veg and yummy sweet treats as well as most basic essentials. They serve hot and cold food 7 days a week from the cafe and have a spacious terrace where you can enjoy your fare, along with stunning views, out in the sunshine. There is also a local butcher and logs for sale on the same site, so a car is not essential if you're happy to stay fairly close to home. Visit the real Hundred Acre Wood! Over 100 years ago A.A. Milne observed the adventures of his son (Christopher Robin) with his toys in the woods by their home, in the Ashdown Forest, gaining inspiration for the beloved and world famous Winnie the Pooh stories. Several locations mentioned in the Pooh stories can be matched to real places in and around the forest. The "Hundred Acre Wood", for example, was inspired by the actual five hundred acre's making up the Ashdown Forest. Galleon’s Leap (appearing in various story books) was inspired by the bare hilltop of Gill’s Lap. You can visit the bridge where Christopher Robin 'invented' Pooh sticks and you'll find the official Poor Corner Gift Shop and Tea Rooms in Hartfield Village. There are countless walking opportunities here and a great deal to explore and discover in the local area, including the beautiful and historic Hever Castle, once home to Anne Bolyen, just 20 mins drive away. If you do drive, I recommend heading towards Nutley on the A22. Immediately north of the village turn right, rattle over a cattle grid, and you'll find various car parks a few hundred yards on. Some wonderful walks here and beautiful views of vast open spaces fringed by woodland. There is free parking on site for one car. The nearest bus stop is in Hartfield Village, under 2km from the cottage. East Grinstead or Cowden are the nearest train stations, both 10/15 mins drive. away. I can offer train station transfers on arrival and departure. The room has a double bed but we welcome families with small children who could utilise the sofa and/or bring a travel cot. We have a wide variety of children's books, games and activities available in the communal dining room and a very friendly ginger tom cat called William who has free rein of the communal areas. To welcome you we provide fresh food supplies from local organic farms, including: tea/coffee, milk, bread and honey (if Pooh doesn't find it first!) However, this is self-catering accommodation and daily breakfast is not included. Gluten/dairy free options are available on request.
