Casa de Santo Antonio de Britiande
When you visit Casa de Santo António de Britiande you will find a house that is several centuries old, where guests are given the opportunity to come into contact and share experiences with a wine-producing family that has been rooted in the Douro. Casa de Santo António is in Britiande (a small town 5 km from Lamego in the district of Viseu), at the crossroads of the Cister Wine Route and the Port Wine Route. It enjoys a privileged situation and from here you can set out to discover the magnificent scenery of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro – the world’s first Demarcated Region, created by the Marquis of Pombal on 10 September 1756; and classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The estate is mainly planted with fruit trees (almond, cherry, apple, walnut and pear) in addition to chestnut trees. The property’s extensive gardens are also embellished with other flora: artichokes, lavender, oak, cedar, ash, wisteria, jasmine, liquidambar, lime and other species. The manor house, with a 16th century façade, served as a place of retreat for the Franciscan friars of the Convent of Santo António de Ferreirim and was part of the eight entailed properties in Britiande. Part of the estate of Casa de Santo António de Britiande is the chapel, dated 1680, with the arms of the Miranda, Homem and Morgados de Britiande families, a Renaissance retable, walls lined in 17th century tiles and the ceiling in polychrome wood caissons. Casa de Santo António de Britiande has four bedrooms (three doubles and one twin). Each has a characteristic name associated with the flora that is visible from the windows. The bedrooms are inside the house and were designed and decorated in a light classical style. All the accommodation provides an inviting and romantic atmosphere with wooden floors and contrasting colours. Accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis. The rooms have private bathrooms, central heating and wireless Internet access.
