House with great views next to San Felipe castle
We are renting our family holiday home in the small and quiet fishing village of San Felipe. The house has great views of the water and green forested hills, it is fully kitted and includes access to a separate garden accessible through a path. We are a short walk to the famous castle of San Felipe and local beaches. Good base to explore the region. Short drive to old navy town Ferrol and stunning ocean beaches, and just one hour from Santiago de Compostela y La Coruña airports. The house is in the highest part of the village and has magnificent views over the water and surrounding hills. Located in a pedestrian lane, it is quiet and very safe for children. The house is set over three storeys, with the kitchen in the ground floor and the sitting room at the top in the attic. The main bedroom has a double bed and very large chestnut wood wardrobe. The second bedroom also has a double bed but the wardrobe is smaller. The third bedroom has an extra-wide single bed of 105 cm and another wardrobe. The sitting room has a small sofa-bed that fits one adult or two children. The bathrooms are located in the ground and first floor. Both have bathtub and shower, although one tub is medium-sized. We have a large beautifully crafted solid wood kitchen, with everything you need to cook: pots, pans crockery, etc. We also provide oil, salt and other basics. There is an electric filter coffee maker, a microwave and hand blender. The kitchen has dishwasher, washing machine and condensation dryer. The large solid hardwood table will seat up to 12 people and the raised block/ breakfast bar has two stools. You will have access to the whole main house except for some locked cupboards that we ask you not to try to open. They don’t have handles so this should not be an issue! There is access to a separate garden some thirty metres away down a path from the back of the house. The stone outbuilding attached to the garden is not included in the rental. In most cases we will receive you in person, as we need to do some paperwork for legal reasons. As you will be getting the whole house, we will not be around after completing the check in, but we will available at any time to deal with any issues. Our house is located in the quiet village of San Felipe, a small fishing village on the shore of a large water inlet similar to a Nordic fjord. The village is mainly active during the hotter months and local families spend the whole long Spanish school holiday there, with many parents commuting within the region. A short walk from the house there are two small beaches frequented by locals that are very safe and ideal for children, as they are completely protected from the open ocean. There is a small children playground and a multi-sport court (basketball/ 5 side football) just two minutes away. The village has two restaurants, one of which is a seafood specialist. There is no local shop in the village but one mile drive away, in in the village of La Graña there are shops and several bars for evening drinking. San Felipe is famous for its eponymous huge castle, which is free to visit and has been in use from the 16th century at the time of the Armada until only 20 years ago. During the Spanish Civil war it housed political prisoners and you can see commemorative plates. The castle is part of a network of fortifications that protected the naval city of Ferrol, the main port of the Spanish navy until very recently, located a short drive away. The city boasts some impressive naval architecture and many modernist buildings for the early 20th century. If you prefer bigger waves and long stretches of perfect sand, the beaches that give this quiet corner of Spain its reputation as a surfing paradise are just a few minutes drive away: Doniños, San Xurxo (great for kite and windsurfing), Covas or Pantín. This is an excellent base for exploring the region, Santiago de Compostela is one hour drive away and La Coruña only 45 minutes. The house is in a pedestrian lane, some 60 metres from the main road. Please see the details instructions we will send you once you confirm your booking. You will need a car to get to San Felipe. Parking is free and there is space near the start of the lane. The nearest petrol station is in La Cabana, in the direction of Ferrol, some 5 miles away. There is a very limited bus service to Ferrol and on occasion during the summer a charter boat service brings visitors to the castle. The layout of the house means that you will have to use the stairs quite often. If you have mobility problems this may be an issue. We actually find that we feel healthier after spending some days there! The house is in a small cluster of houses with neighbours, not a completely isolated location. The surrounding forests have wild animals - deer and boar - and on occasions these come near the houses during the night making the village dogs bark.
