The Station Master's House

A lovely 19th cottage, tastefully furnished and easily accessible to the southern hemisphere's most spectacular valley. Capertee is adored by birdwatchers internationally and our garden is home to dozens of species. A short walk to a fabulous pub. Get away from it all in this beautifully renovated 1880s house. Bird-watchers paradise. If you want a break in a romantic old house with the best the old world has to offer - deep, clawfoot bath, comfy beds, sunny verandah - come to the Station Masters House. We have a satellite TV with built in DVD, a CD player and iPod dock. If you want to curl up with the newspaper, sit on the verandah with a good book or spend a few hours lingering over dinner in the spacious kitchen, this is the place for you. There is a huge enclosed garden, including flourishing herbs for your use, and the spectacular Capertee Valley on your doorstep, world famous for bird watching. See if you can spot the wonderful Regent Honeyeater. But you don't even have to leave the garden to spot fabulous birds. We have a Bower-bird nesting on site as well as visiting lorikeets, wrens and others. Train enthusiasts will delight in the heritage-listed station nearby. There are three bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed, another with a queen, and another with three singles. Linen and warm doonas are provided for all beds and there are electric blankets on the King and Queen beds. The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, sharp German knives, a food processor, a serious cast iron casserole pot and plenty of glassware and crockery. Efficient gas heating will keep everyone warm. There is a small library overlooking the garden and a lounge room with three comfy sofas. Lovely art on the walls adds character and beauty. Here are some of our favourite vantage points: Sitting on the front verandah under the grape vine. In summer the vine forms a translucent green curtain providing shade and beauty. In autumn it turns a spectacular purple and in winter when the leaves have dropped the sun streams through. It's a beautiful sight from both of the front bedrooms - the King and the singles. Lying in the bath looking out to the fig tree. Having an afternoon snooze in the Queen sized bed looking out to the eucalypts. The original 19th century glass in the bedroom window slightly distorts the outlook into graceful Art Nouveau lines. Sitting on the back terrace in the early evening and watching the gum trees turn pink as the sun sets. This is also the perfect spot to watch the bower birds feed on the fig tree. Yes, we like to share the fruit with them! Come morning when you open the curtains in the Queen bedroom, you're likely to see brilliant red and green king parrots feeding on the white cedar. Reading in the library armchair with a coffee and the morning sun. There are novels, cookbooks, non-fiction and a great selection of short stories. The whole house and its surrounding garden are yours to enjoy. We're not on site but you're welcome to contact us by phone or email any time with questions. We are perched at the top of one of the world's most spectacular valleys. There's also a friendly pub a short walk away that serves home cooked food and woodfired pizzas. We're half an hour by car from Lithgow, 20 minutes from Portland and 45 minutes from Mudgee town centre. At last there is mobile reception in Capertee. We supply sheets, towels and basic amenities such as toilet paper for a few days but you may need to restock for longer stays.
