Le Bas Chesnay is a bed and breakfast set in a delightful detached old barn full of character. It offers a separate lounge which guests can relax in after their busy day exploring. Both bedrooms are upstairs from the lounge and have their own bathrooms. Most guests are either active explorers of the area or seek a place to quietly relax and unwind. The Historical Medieval town of Domfront is 5 minutes’ drive away and an Intermarche only 2 minutes drive. A vehicle is a must. We have two bedrooms at Le Bas the Maple and the Rose rooms , sleeping a total of four people. Therefore, there may be times that you will be sharing the lounge/breakfast area with other guests. If you wish to book our other room (the Rose Room ) as well as the Maple room, this is also available on Airbnb. Our lounge/breakfast area is a comfortable space to relax in, we have magazines, record player, tea and coffee making facilities, as well as a lovely log burner for those chilly nights. The bedrooms each have 2 single beds with their own en-suite shower room, with complimentary toiletries. A Hairdryer is also available in each room. Guests can use of ave their own some outdoor seating overlooking the pond and garden area. Parking is available on the driveway by the main gate. We live on site and are on hand should our guests need to speak to us. WELCOME to Le Bas Chesnay. We purchased La Bas in November (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) ; we fell in love with the property as soon as we turned the corner into the start of what is now our land. France is our permanent home, we live on site, with our two border collies Blu and Skye and cat called Bear. We wake up every day and pinch ourselves because we know we are so lucky to live in this part of France and all that it has to offer. We are lucky enough to be in the Parc Naturel Regional Normandia-Maine which covers 257,000 hectares across two regions and four departments (One, Manche, Mayenne and Sarthe. Our home is set in 2.5 acres of very peaceful countryside surrounded by working farmland, with sheep and cows a plenty. Although, once here you feel you are in the middle of nowhere, we are in fact only 2 minutes and 5 minutes’ drive from a supermarket and the Historical Medieval town of Domfront. When we purchased the property, we decided to open two of the bedrooms as Chambres d’ Hôtes. They are called Maple (as we have a wonderful Maple tree in our garden) and Rose (as we have an abundance of roses at the front of the property). Both rooms can accommodate two people and have en-suite shower rooms. You will find plenty of character with exposed old beams, stonework and log burner in the lounge/breakfast area for the chilli nights. The lounge /breakfast area is a shared space with the other chambres d’ hôtes guests. Both rooms and our gite (which also sleeps 4) are advertised on Airbnb. A little bit of background on the various ways the property is spelt. We have 3 different spellings for our home: Le Bas Chesnay, Le Bas Chenay and Le Bas Chenais. Le Chesnay is recognised by the Le poste Le Bas Chenais is the name on (Hidden by Airbnb) map, which will not recognise any other spelling. Le Bas Chenay was the how the previous owners spelt it. Despite this, it is the same property and not three individual ones Normandy is beautiful and has so much to offer. Le Bas Chesnay is an ideal base to explore all that the region has, there is something for everyone, especially for travellers who have not ventured abroad before, or for the hardened tourers whether it is on two or four wheels, Normandy is a great place to visit. We offer a great stop over en-route to other destinations as well as for those travellers who want to spend some more time discovering Normandy. The local area has a variety of recreational activities, forest walks, cycle routes, mountain bike routes, excellent for road and off-road biking, golf, tennis, kayaking, swimming, spa town or an ideal base for house hunting. Equally if you just want to get away from your busy life and relax this is the ideal place, to kick back, read books, listen to music or just the bird song in beautiful surroundings and in one of the most peaceful settings we have ever experienced. For the two wheeler tourers we have plenty of undercover /secure parking for your bikes/motorbikes as well as a workshop to carry out basic maintenance or to wash your bikes down. Although our driveway is gravel it is firm enough for motorbikes. Normandy is a region rich in history, beautiful countryside, beaches and visitor attractions. Bocage refers to the ancient method of raised borders around the fields that give the region its beauty. The countryside is green and undulating. It is perfect for walking, cycling, motorbiking and touring. Normandy is full of easy-to-follow walking routes and cycling paths, many of which follow disused single-track railway lines. If it is beaches you prefer you have a multitude to choose from: Carolles, Deauville, Trouville , Granville and Ouistreham. Domfront - home town of Le Bas Chenay, with the remains of the ancient chateau, medieval churches, cobbled streets and centuries-old buildings and historical links to England. With its turrets and winding streets, Domfront offers a touch of Medieval romance to temper the raw immediacy of the WW2 sites. Eleanor of Aquitaine – arguably Europes wealthiest, most powerful and cultured royal matriarch, and wife of Henry II, the Plantagenet King of England - had a court here in the middle of the 12th century. A hundred years earlier, William the Conqueror laid siege to its castle. Medieval barons fought in Orne over their power bases at Domfront, Chambois and Mortagne. Or against the English, who occupied the Orne capital, Alençon, for nearly a hundred years. For the more active (or adventurous), there is bungy jumping at Clècy, canoeing at Torchamp or Thury Harcourt. For the children there is Festyland at Caen, The Enchanted Village at Belle Fontaine, the Zoo at Jurques and the water park at St Hilaire de Harcouet. There are also excellent swimming pools at Flers, Thury Harcout and Bagnoles de l Orne. Normandy is blessed with three world class attractions: Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel: The Benedictine Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most remarkable examples of mediaeval religious and military architecture and was one of Christianity's most important pilgrimage sites from the 8th to the 18th century. The Abbey comprises a superb ensemble of clerical buildings including the abbey church, the cloister, the refectory, the monks ambulatory and the gardens of what has been known as the "Merveille" (Marvel) since the 12th century. Open all year round and open until late in the summer months. The Landing Beaches: A multitude of museums pay tribute to the soldiers who came ashore on D-Day. The beaches stretch from Ouistreheam to the Contentin peninsula. They had code named Omaha, Sword, Juno, Gold and Utah. There is a museum at Sainte-Mère-Eglise, dedicated to the American 82nd Airborne division. Today, you can relive their stories and the epic (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) struggle across a network of battle sites, museums and memorials and via a series of special 'Battle of Normandy'. Bayeux Tapestry: Bayeux home of the tapestry and a charming medieval town. The tapestry depicts events leading up to the Norman conquest of England. Also, well worth a visit are: Veloscenic cycle route Paris to Mont – St – Michel: From Domfront, you can join the cycle route to Mont-St-Michel, this section of La Véloscénie to the Mont St-Michel follows a greenway along a disused railway line going through the typical quiet countryside of the Bocage Normand. This area is reputed for its apple and pear orchards and its gastronomy. You'll pass the pretty villages of Mortain and Ducey. From Domfront, an alternative route along another greenway takes you to Flers via the charming Varenne Valley. Caen - chateau, abbeys, museums and shopping. Falaise - William the Conqueror's chateau and the Falaise pocket that mark the end of the battle of Normandy. Alencon - departmental capital of the Orne . The craftsmanship of Alençon needle lace, is the latest to be recognised by UNESCO, because of its traditional Alencon lace, which takes 25 hours to produce a piece the size of a postage stamp – kept alive through the National Lace Workshop in Alencon. Visitors can explore the world of needle lace at the Museum of Fine Art and Lace (Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle) in Alençon. Bagnoles de l Orne - the biggest spa town in western France, a charming town set around a large lake, overlooked by the casino. Hot stones, mud baths … you name it, Bagnoles has got it and in every combination. As well, of course, as the towns renowned panacea, the classic spa waters with their antioxidant trace elements. At night, Bagnoles is said to be a Town of Thousand Lights as the Casino and the town's glitzy restaurants come to life. Carrouges - a brick chateau with moat and rare apple orchards. Lassay les Chateaux - unusual chateau with round towers. Pear Cider and Calvados: Orne's lush orchards comes vintage calvados, cool cider, pommeau - and poiré, a refreshing, sparkling pear cider that is Ornes speciality, signature drink and Poire Museum - discover the local pear cider and calvados. Clècy - centre of Suisse Normandy, restaurants and bars on the river side. Le Ferte - Mace. Extensive leisure park of 28 hectares, the lake of La Ferte-Mace is fully equipped to offer a variety of activities and fun for the whole family. Swimming, windsurfing, pedal boats, horseback riding, canoeing, mini-golf as well as having its own beach. Horse Racing: there are race courses at Argentan, Moulins-la-Marche, Alençon and la Bergerie au Pin-au-Haras. National stud: Le Haras du Pin. Furioso, Workaholic, Cruiser, Policy Maker, Florestan, El Ouassal and other hallowed names have all been put to stud or stabled here. If it is heritage you are seeking, meet the Percheron, Orne is the birthplace of this docile giant, which for centuries powered French agriculture and carried France s knights into battle. A vehicle is a must if you're looking to explore a lot in the area, however a lot of our guests are cyclists passing through and are happy to cycle the short distance to some of the local attractions or amenities. Nearby are local shops, bars and restaurants which can be reached by various cycle and walking routes. We are spoilt with our lovely open roads and glorious undulating countryside, which can be enjoyed on either two or four wheels.
