Spacious, antique and luxurious, Somaland is the place to be to relax and allow yourself be taken care of. The Somaland Estate was created more than a hundred years ago by an immigrant from the Galle region. He arrived in these hills with nothing more than a bull cart, a Southern knack for trade and a dream. Within a relatively short time he owned the whole valley and built himself a dream estate among the trees. Antique, authentically Sri Lankan and tastefully decorated, this house feels like every owner it's had has loved it very much. Although it's old, it is very well kept and has bags of character, much of it derived from its owners. With many spacious but intimate rooms, this place is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. Many of the original features are still present, including the detailed woodwork and the traditional Sri Lankan kitchen that is still in use today. Even the garden is full of surprises. You'll see... Your Host Mr Gamage is a descendant of the man who built the house all those years ago. Every nook and cranny holds a story which Mr Gamage will tell (if you ask him). Mr Gamage takes care of the house, garden and can take you to and from the Gampola train station for a charge in the Land Rover. Mrs Gamage keeps the house clean and cooks up some serious curries if you'd like (you will!). And not to mention the avocado smoothie she makes? Atabage is no metropolis. It's tucked nicely away between the paddy fields and tea plantations, just the way we like it. Although you're close enough to take day trips to Gampola, Kandy, and even Nuwara Elia, you'll probably not want to leave the estate at all. Why not go for a walk around the house instead and have a good look at the immediate surroundings. That terraced garden in the back? A spice garden. Those bushes? Tea. That blue piece of heavenly freshness? A pool! We are committed to maintaining Airbnb’s Protocol on COVID-19 prevention, such as the use of personal protective equipment, like masks and gloves, as well as disinfectants that are approved by local regulatory authorities. Further, we keep our home empty for a set period in between stays, with no activity other than cleaning, to make sure that you have a safe and memorable stay with us. Longer stays on the entire basis is preferred.
