Karetu Downs Farm Stay

Relax in peaceful surroundings on a New Zealand Hill Country property. Karetu Downs a Kiwi owned farm with 5000 sheep and 100 head of cattle. Sheep shearing, bottle feed lambs, farm tours, river swimming, hiking, mountain biking, amazing hillviews. Guests can feed the pet lambs. Meet the kune kune pigs Wilby and Ginger, Meet Barney our donkey. Feed the chickens. The farm has many areas to explore-the river for swimming or fishing, hike or mountain bike the hills. We offer 4 wheel drive farm tours and sheep shearing demonstrations. We are a working sheep and cattle farm so guests are welcome to watch on farm activities. Dependent on what time of the year guests may get to watch the shearing gang in action, lambing time, bobby calf feeding, feeding hay to mobs of sheep, watching the farm dogs work the sheep or even tailing lambs. There is always plenty of activity happening on the farm. We are close to the Waipara Valley wine growing area. It is a short drive to vineyards and cafe/restaurants. Pegasus Bay Winery, Black hill Estate, Waipara Hills, Terence Downs to name a few. The Weka Pass Railway -travel through the Weka Pass via steam train great day excursion while staying at the farm. Iron Ridge Quarry sculpture park 15 minutes drive from the farm. There is plenty of free parking at Karetu Downs. Most people arrive via rental car or campervan. From Amberley township we are about 25 minutes drive. Part of the road is unsealed but easy driving -this only adds to the adventure for many.
