Hi, My name is Sepal and I welcome you to my guesthouse 'Surf Kingdom' right on Meddawatta Beach in Matara. We have 6 rooms with private bathroom and ceiling fan, breakfast and a kitchen you can use, and surfboards to rent. See you soon! The guesthouse is surrounded by a garden with plenty flowers and banana- and coconut trees. (If you come during the right season they are yours to enjoy) There is no traffic noise, but instead the sound of waves from the beach which is 50 meters away (about 30 seconds walking or faster if you sprint) Surf Kingdom has for rooms all with big comfy beds with a moscito net, a ceiling fan, a desk and private bathrooms with shower. The rooms are painted white and are clean, light and welcoming. Among the guests the atmosphere is friendly, we often cook or have a beer together. If you decide to stay longer as many people do, you will be able to share many great memories. Besides the privacy of their rooms guest have access to the kitchen (fridge, sink, dishes and stovetop) and can hang out in the garden or living area. We also have a safe surfboard storage and a BBQ-grill. I also offer breakfast to my guest for the price of 500 rupees you can have bread, with butter and jam, eggs, a big fruit salad, coffee or tea and different Sri Lankan specialities (Roti, string hoppers, egg hoppers, palm honey or local buffalo yoghurt (curd) ) Look at my photo to get an impression and I can guarantee you that this is the best deal in town :-) My guests and I are often cooking dinner together or sharing some beer. I like to help my guest to make sure they enjoy their time here, but also respect when they just want relax time. I can give advice on nearby attractions and can help you get their or organize a tour. I also rent surfboards or can a arrange surf lessons with a surf instructor at a discounted price for guests. I can buy groceries for you or we can go to the market together (great experience) The Neighborhood The Surf Kingdom Guesthouse is situated 50 meters away from the beach about 100 meters from the Matara Beach Road. It is in a green and lush neighborhood called Meddawatta (Beach). The town center of Matara is 5 minutes away by bus or 3 Wheeler or a 20 minute walk. Meddawatta Beach is wide and sandy. It has shallow swimming spots and different surf beach breaks as well, good for beginner and advanced surfers. On an average day there are about 20-30 surfers in the water. It won't be crowded but you won't be lost all by yourself either. There is a friendly vibe and visitors and locals share the wave. In the evening guests can also join the soccer games happening at the beach or try to partake in a game of Cricket, Sri Lankas national sport. You can also run on the beach, collect mussels for dinner or explore the secluded Jungle Beach by hiking over some rocks. There are different restaurants, shops and bars in the neighborhood and along the beach all about 5 minutes walking away. Matara Town Matara is a bustling regional hub with about 80.000 inhabitants. It is mostly unaffected by tourism and gives you the chance to experience and immerse yourself in Sri Lankan culture. Twice weekly a big market attracts vendors from all over the region selling vegetables, fruits, spices, fish and other fresh, local products. You can also just enjoy the energy of the market, but you are likely to end up buying something. Matara is famous for its longstanding batik tradition and there are shops selling batik art and clothing, as well as organizing workshops to teach you the technique. For your other shopping needs visit the main street with vendors of clothing, shoes and big supermarkets selling international products. The pride of main street is the PizzaHut restaurant. (well..enjoy if you like :-) ) Sights in the town are the old dutch fort, (a mini fort and never attacted), the wall fortifications, an intricate mosque and church, as well as the river, where sometimes you can see crocodiles. There a many buddhist temples in Matara, the most prominent one sitting on a rock island in front of the town (Please give a donation) Matara offers a wide array of food choices from simple street food, to indian, chinese, thai and western restaurants. You can find good fresh sea food and traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, yours to discover. The surrounding area to come soon.. We also have guide books at the guesthouse in English and German helping you to find your way around. Matara is a regional transport hub offering train and bus connections to Galle, Colombo and further North. Busses take you East to Tangalle, Tissamahara, Yala Nationalpark and onwards to Arugam Bay. Busses also run to the mountains to Ella, Haputale, Nuwara Eliya and Hatton. Local busses make it possible to reach smaller villages along the coast or inland. To get around in town is easy by bus, 3-Wheeler, Scooter, bycicle or simply walking. (avoid the heat around noon) My dog lives at the property, her name is Shooty.
