Agwe Villa is a delightful and rare two storey antique house in a fishing village, five minutes’ walk to the local beach and a five minutes’ tuk tuk ride to Hikkaduwa (20 minutes to the beautiful UNESCO Heritage site of Galle Fort). This fully-furnished house with pool sits in half an acre of tropical gardens, complete with tropical fruit trees, palm trees and flowers. Bookings are now available and we look forward to welcoming visitors back to Sri Lanka. Please keep updated via the Sri Lankan embassy for details relating to travel restrictions. Set within a large garden, and featuring a private pool with sun beds, Agwe Villa is a historic two-storey house which was gently renovated to protect its original, authentic feel. All the doors and shutters are antique, the upstairs floor boards are beautiful old teak, and the downstairs flooring is rustic concrete. Most of the furniture is either antique, dated from the same era as the house (approximately 1880) or replica furniture exquisitely hand crafted by the local carpenter. The house was purchased from the original Sri Lankan family who had owned it for four generations and it has played an historic role in the lives of many of the village residents. There are three bedrooms: 1 x Ground floor family room - queen size bedroom plus an adjoining children's room with two single beds. Toilet and shower (not en-suite). Ceiling fans. 2 x upstairs super-king size bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms, air-conditioning, ceiling fans. The house comes with full time security / caretaking staff and CCTV, as well as a weekly cleaner. A large wall at the front and back, and fencing to the sides, provides additional privacy so that you can enjoy the pool and garden without interruption. The local beach is like discovering paradise for many – only a few minutes’ walk and you will find nothing more than clean white sand and warm waves, with only a few other people around. The bustling fishing harbour is a wonderful sight, and the market is open nearly every day providing local residents with freshly caught seafood. The lake is peaceful and many people have started to discover stand up paddleboarding there, particularly popular at sunrise. In Hikkaduwa, some of the very best cafes, restaurants and beach bars are found along the entire Narigama / Hikkaduwa beach strip. Salty Swamis, Riff Hotel, The Sea Salt Society, Mambos and many others provide great food, drinks and atmosphere alongside some of the best surfing breaks the country has to offer. Closer to the house, you can enjoy lunch or dinner at the five start Aditya hotel, just a couple of minutes down the road. The entire main house, garden and pool. You can either contact us via Airbnb or speak to our villa manager who will be on call for anything you need. A traditional fishing village with a couple of small, local shops and restaurants. We have a five star hotel nearby (Aditya) whose restaurant and bar are open to non-hotel residents. We have local rotty shops and a beach-side seafood restaurant further down along our local beach. We are a short walk to Dodanduwa beach and Rathgama lake. Hikkaduwa and Narigama, a popular tourist town with great surf, beaches, bars, restaurants and shops is only five minutes away by Tuk Tuk. You can also walk past the fishing harbour in Dodanduwa to the start of Narigama beach for a lovely, long beach walk that takes you all the way to Hikkaduwa. We've got a couple of local tuk tuk drivers that we highly recommend. Regular buses also drive along the Galle - Colombo road. The Dodanduwa train station is nearby and the Hikkaduwa train station (with express trains to Colombo and the South) is about ten minutes away. This is a self-catering villa but if you would like us to arrange a cook or additional cleaning, please let us know and we will help to arrange this. If renting long term (four weeks or more), utility bills (wifi, electricity and water) are payable separately. The downstairs is not air-conditioned but the upstairs rooms are. Downstairs, there are ceiling fans and the original ventilation gaps built high into the walls to allow rising air to leave and to keep the rooms cool. It is a very pleasant temperature and can feel naturally “air-conditioned” due to the natural breeze and shade. Two village dogs owned by a neighbour may sometimes come to the house to say hello. They are very sweet and friendly, and are great with children. This is a local village where people work, live and play. As such, you may hear the children going to school, people bustling about, fireworks on New Year's Eve (Western and Sri Lankan, which is in mid-April), wedding ceremonies and more. We have a temple on the other side of the village and two schools nearby. This is not a fancy villa by the beach surrounded by other fancy villas by the beach! We welcome you here to feel what it's like to be a part of the real coastal Sri Lanka.
