The Green Hut: A haven of peace and tranquility
The Green Hut is a cosy but luxurious getaway in the walker's paradise of Batcombe, situated just behind our converted barn in a tree-lined paddock. This self-contained shepherd's hut is perfect for one or two people to immerse themselves in true rural relaxation, whilst being close to the beautiful market towns of Frome and Bruton. Whether sat outside soaking up the views in the sunshine, or snuggled up by the wood burner on a rainy day, The Green Hut is the ideal place to unwind. The Green Hut is such a cosy space, with a cupboard style, comfy bed and two gorgeous chairs to sit in and relax whilst enjoying the little log burning fire. Also, there is a lot of outside space available to guests including chairs and table, benches placed around the area, one in a little wooded patch with a view to the village and one in the adjoining paddock which gives views of hills and woods. On a summer's morning or afternoon, this is the spot to sometimes watch the neighbouring famer's cows making their way to and from the fields before and after milking time. (This particular farmer sells his milk to the public straight from the farm). The field behind the Green Hut is beautiful and accessed by a private gate. Following the public footpath, walkers can climb the hill and beyond, to enjoy even more glorious view s. The Green Hut is situated in the paddock behind a converted barn. As the host, I live in the barn and as a retired but avid gardener, I am often to be see pottering in my polytunnel or in my garden. I am usually available if guests wish to ask questions or discuss anything relating to their stay. Although the Green Hut is nestled in a quiet, pretty village in the countryside, it is actually very close to some interesting towns such as Frome (9 miles) and Bruton ( 3 miles) and Glastonbury and Bath a little further a field. In the nearby area, there is the wonderful National Trust gardens, estate and house of Stourhead as well as the spectacular gardens of 'The Newt'. Bruton has some great places to visit for Coffee, Lunch and Dinner as well as the famous Hauser and Wirth Art gallery. Frome too, boasts some great restaurants and cafes, as well as the absolute charm of many little independent shops on Catherine's Hill. The area also has many lively markets and we are lucky to have some fabulous farm shops on our doorstep. This is a small flavour of an area which is great for walking and cycling, eating, drinking, markets, gardens and so much more but for a dip into a more metrapolitan culture, we also have the beautiful Georgian city of Bath just over 20 miles away. Rural country life necessitates the use of a car or taxi. The nearest train stations are in Bruton, Frome and Castle Cary. If driving be aware that this is a farming community and on occasions there will be tractors, trailers, large harvesting equipment and sometimes even cows or sheep using the roads as well. So, the key tip here, is drive slowly. This area is blessed with many footpaths and has some spectacular views whilst walking around the village and beyond. The landscape changes quite quickly to the west, on the route to Glastonbury as the Somerset Levels come into view and there are many interesting walks on the levels, a place for bird watchers and those wishing to see the magnificent murmurations of starlings in the late autumn. To the East there are the Wiltshire hills, the Deverills, to explore as well as the miriad of walks through the woods of the Stourhead estate. Beyond the market town of Frome, lies the pretty little town of Bradford on Avon, which is a delight to visit and has long canal walks - as far as Bath for the intrepid. Finally, if you can tear yourself away from this beautiful area, the Jurassic Coast is approximately 45 miles from here. The Green Hut has a small kitchen area. A space to make tea or coffee, dip into the biscuit tin or make some toast. There will always be a bottle of milk, butter, bread , spreads, tea and coffee. There is a mini fridge in the hut but in the shed behind the hut there is a larger fridge freezer available for your use. Although it is not possible to cook properly in the hut, there is a gas burner and pan available for outside cooking. Great for fry ups, making paella and much more.
