Rosendal – Cosy Cottage for Countryside & Coast
Rosendal Cottage is nestled on the edge of the stunning historic town of Winchelsea, overlooking beautiful countryside and adjacent to the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The cottage itself is cosy, yet has ample space for entertaining, with an open-plan kitchen, dining area and generous garden. It has WiFi and Freesat TV. It's a perfect base for exploring, with gorgeous walking and cycling paths, including the 1066 trail and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and nearby Winchelsea beach. Rosendal sits in a quiet parade of cottages, set back from the A259, with a generous front garden. The cottage is accessed via stairs from the pavement into the garden. Downstairs, you'll find the cosy lounge with large sofa, armchair, wood burner and Freesat TV. This leads into an open plan kitchen and dining area, which opens out onto the back garden. This is an enclosed space with a patio, table and chairs, lawn, BBQ and plum tree. There is a side gate for easy access between the front and back gardens. The bathroom is located downstairs, with a toilet, sink, roll top bath with shower. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, the largest located at the front of the house, with a double bed and digital radio. The second bedroom overlooks the garden and has wonderful views out across the countryside towards Rye. This bedroom has a queen size bed. The third bedroom, also to the rear with lovely views, has bunk beds and is ideal for children. PLEASE NOTE: There are stairs from the pavement to the garden, the path in the garden is stony and the bath is roll-top with no handrails to get in or out. The walk from the town to the cottage is reasonably short, but up a hill which is unlit at night. This may make the property unsuitable for some people. If in any doubt, please send an enquiry to discuss. From the cottage, Winchelsea is a 5 minute walk up Strand Hill. Here, you'll find a lovely deli, church, small museum and pub. The parking in town is ample and free, and is the best place to park your car. There are many gorgeous walks you can do straight from the front door, including Icklesham, Rye Nature Reserve, Pett Level, Camber Castle, Winchelsea Beach and Rye Town. There are bus stops just along from the cottage, with services into Rye and Hastings. There's also a train station approx 10 minutes walk away, which runs into Ashford and Hastings. The cottage is set on the edge of the ancient and historic town of Winchelsea, a 5 minute walk into the centre of this famous Cinque Port – possibly the smallest town in England. The beautifully laid out streets are picturesque and peaceful, home to a church, a well-stocked deli, and a pub with a glorious garden. It's full of history and interesting discoveries, with the Winchelsea Museum a great place to begin. Being surrounded by beautiful countryside and coastline, we're spoilt for choice when it comes to cycling, walks and short drives. It's a wonderful area to explore! The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty starts here, and we love taking the path through the fields and alongside the River Brede to Icklesham Village for lunch at the Queen's Head pub. The Royal Military Canal walk starts practically on our doorstep and is a firm favourite. It runs through the Pannel Valley Reserve, a haven for wildlife and walkers. You can either take a shorter circular route which loops back up the hill into Winchelsea, or continue along the canal for a couple more miles to the lovely coastal village of Pett Level – a top spot for rockpooling and spotting extraordinary costal features, such as a petrified forest. The kids love it here. The award-winning Charles Palmer Vinyard is a lovely walk away. We're yet to visit the cellar door here, but are reliably informed the sparkling wines are a perfect reward for the short walk. Another great route from the doorstep is the walk to Camber Castle, through the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve – famous for its bird life – to Henry VIII's impressive fortress. If you're feeling fit, the walk continues into Rye, which is a glorious Cinque Port town harbouring cafes, delis, artisan shops and galleries. We love the Ypres Castle Inn for lunch and a pint, with its garden high up overlooking Rye Harbour, Romney Marsh and the English Channel. Winchelsea Beach is a 20 minute walk away, cutting through a field and passing The Ship pub, another perfect spot for lunch. The beach is shingle at high tide, but has long sandy stretches at low tide and is a real hidden gem. The paved costal path runs for miles, one way towards Pett Level via a great little cafe, the other to Rye Harbour through the nature reserve. Hastings is a 20 minute drive, or you can catch the bus just a few seconds from the front door. There's a bus into Rye too. If you're after miles of sandy beach and dunes, Camber Sands is a short drive or a beautiful cycle. The list really does go on and on. We love the mix of coast and countryside, and are continually making new discoveries and finding exciting walks. It really is a beautiful corner of England. Winchelsea town is a 5 minute walk from the cottage, crossing the A259 and walking up a hill. The views along the walk are stunning and great for spotting rabbits, but the hill has uneven surfaces and could be a challenge for the less mobile. Keen walkers can easily access a wealth of locations, many on traffic-free footpaths through the countryside. Rye, Rye Harbour, Winchelsea Beach, Pett Level and Icklesham can all be reached on foot. The cottage is set back from the A259, and there are bus stops on this road, a short walk from the front door. Take the 101 for Rye, which takes 20 minutes, or the 100 to Hastings which takes 45 minutes. By car, you can stop outside the cottage to unload, then drive into Winchelsea Town for ample free parking. Rye, Hastings and the glorious Camber Sands are all short drives. Winchelsea has a railway station located outside of town, approximately 20 mins walk from the cottage. Trains run from Hastings and Ashford International, which has fast connections from London.
