A peaceful and welcoming retreat close to beaches
Our home is located on the edge of Cubert village close to Newquay and Perranporth and just a five minute drive or pleasant walk to the beautiful Holywell Bay. Your comfortable room has breathtaking views over Penhale Sand Dunes, open countryside and the Atlantic ocean in the distance plus a very big sky! Your room has excellent facilities and you have exclusive access to a large bathroom nextdoor. We are on hand to help make your stay great, but respect your privacy absolutely. Our home, which we call "There Y'arr sea" (There we are; sea), is located in a small modern development of houses in the village of Cubert near and between Newquay and Perranporth and just a five-minute drive to the beautiful beach at Holywell Bay. It's a four-bedroom detached house with breathtaking views over Penhale dunes (The largest in Cornwall with special scientific and conservation designations), open countryside and the Atlantic ocean in the distance plus a very big sky and plenty of sunsets! Our guest room is carpeted, warm, quiet and comfortable. We are far enough away from the village road, so that you don't hear the traffic. The room has a new double bed and mattress with bedside drawers either side , a dressing table with built-in mirror and side drawers. The room also includes a wardrobe with plenty of hangers. We have included a mini fridge, which sits on a separate table and we provide fresh milk and a kettle so you can make your own tea and coffee. We include a range of beverages including Cornish tea, coffee and chocolate. Other items in the room that you'll find useful include: a toaster; an iron and ironing board; a silent clock; an HD TV with Chromecast and DVD player (You'll have access to Wi-Fi); a hairdryer; a full length dress mirror; a ceiling fan; two chairs; three touch controlled dimmable table lamps and a multi-charge cable for your devices. There are also extra pillows and blankets for your comfort. We can provide local OS maps if you're keen walkers and we can give you plenty of ideas about places to visit for fun, food and frollicking. For your safety the house has smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and you'll have access to a torch and a first aid kit in the room. There is a fire extinguisher immediately on the landing opposite your bedroom door. The guest room door has a spy hole and is lockable. Please note that this accommodation is not self-catering and our kitchen is not accessible. Cooking equipment, such as microwave ovens and steamers may NOT be used in the guest bedroom. The room has a sea view and with the weather on your side you'll experience some of the best sunsets you'll ever see. Conversely, if you like to see stars, then the light pollution is very low compared to Newquay and I have binoculars! If you fancy a quiet day at 'home' you are welcome to use our sunbeds and garden chairs in the secluded rear garden (See 'Other notes' re access arrangements during the Covid epidemic). During your stay you will have use of your own large private bathroom, which includes a toilet, bath, sink and shower. To save on your packing we include shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and hand soap. During the Covid epidemic we have also provided anti-viral spray, hand sanitizer and paper towels. You will have your own parking space in front of our garage door and there's plenty of room for your surfboards in the garage. We also provide a cold outdoor wash down facility to rinse off your surfing equipment (and yourselves). We provide a simple breakfast comprising various cereals, fruit, bread, croissants/pastries, marmalade, jam and fruit juice to your bathroom in sealed containers. Feel free to eat takeaways in your room. Crockery and cutlery is available in your room or in the dresser in the bathroom. Our accommodation is suitable for singles and all couples who love the beauty of Cornwall, but like to retreat to a quiet living space after a hard slog down by the sea. Our aim is to provide you with a vacation experience that will match everything that is good about our wonderful county of Cornwall Sorry, but no dogs or other pets. Unfortunately our house is not adapted for disabled access. This accommodation is not suitable for infants or children. Due to local authority planning restrictions we are unable to accommodate Campervans and Caravans on our parking spaces or on our estate generally. You have access to a Guest Bedroom and exclusive access to Guest Bathroom. Front entrance, hallway, staircase and landing. Access to the rear garden is allowed (if the hosts are not using it for a specific purpose) plus the use of the garden furniture. You can also take shelter in our garden bar (log cabin) if it is unlocked. During the Covid epidemic and in order to maintain a safe social distance you will have to access the garden through the side gate via the front door. Use of the ground floor WC is not permitted during the Covid epidemic. The host will provide access to the garage and door operating fob if you wish to store surf boards or bicycles. Your parking space during your stay is normally the one in front of the garage door. We will advise you prior to your arrival. We welcome our guests just as we would our friends, but we respect your privacy absolutely. Likewise, we still like our own privacy and so other rooms are out of bounds. You will be provided with your own registered front door and room key and can come and go as you like. We live on the premises and will be on hand to help whenever you need it. That being said, we do go out of course, but then you'll have our mobile numbers. On arrival we will offer you a complimentary drink in our lounge or in the garden depending on the weather. This will include tea, coffee, squash or alcohol, but you'll have to like home brewed beer or wine! During the Covid epidemic please shout out for us from the hallway if you need help. We will hear you! If we're out please call our mobiles. Early check-in is sometimes possible by prior arrangement, but will be dependent on whether we have previous guests checking out as we have to have sufficient time to conduct a thorough (Covid) clean and air the room. Checkout from your room and parking space is 11am. We cannot extend the checkout time due to the reasons mentioned above. Holding cases may be possible by prior arrangement. CLOSEST BEACHES: Our nearby sandy beach is the beautiful Holywell Bay, which is a five-minute drive or, if you like a pleasant stroll, you can walk to Holywell Bay via Ellenglaze Valley in 25 - 30 minutes. The walk is downhill and flat all the way! If you don't fancy the walk back you can jump on the bus outside the Treguth Inn back to Cubert (around £2.50 per person). At low tide you can visit the holy well cave. Be sure to get to the National Trust car park early (before 9 AM) during the summer school holidays as it fills up quickly. Public toilets, operated by the National Trust, are on Holywell Road close to the car park. There are also facilities in the Gull Rocks Bar for customers. The popular Crantock beach is a ten-minute drive away, but get to the National Trust car park early in school holidays. There's normally a converted army truck on the sands selling tea, coffee, pastries and ice creams. You will also find other retailers at the back of the beach. Toilets are in the car park. Between these two beaches is the small bay of Porth Joke (or Polly Joke as the locals call it). There is a small National Trust car park accessed via a quite poor track off the main road to West Pentire followed by a ten-minute, fairly flat, walk. It's a small sandy beach and is a less busy beach due to the access. You can also use the car park in West Pentire to access the beach, but it is quite a steep walk. From this beach you can walk along the cliffs to watch the seals. We can let you know where precisely to watch seals when you stay with us. There are no toilets serving this beach. LOCAL PUBS: We have four local pubs nearby. They are all busy in the summer, so please book early. The ANVIL in Cubert is a 6 minute walk from our house. It is currently closed. We have heard it may open for the 2022 summer season. The TREGUTH INN is a 16th Century pub in Holywell Village. It serves lunch and dinner and good local beer. It has a cosy bar and a fairly large restaurant area. It often runs quiz nights and shows football and rugby games on its two TVs. It is open all year round and it's the parish's 'local' pub. There is a car park. The SMUGGLERS DEN INN is a five minute drive or 20 minute walk across the fields (You will need the room torch to walk back after dark). The Smugglers is a large old thatched building with modern extensions. It serves lunch and dinner and local beers. It has plenty of cosy nooks and log fires. There are ocassional music nights and it hosts its most popular pie, music and ale festival at the beginning of May over the bank holiday. It has a large beer garden and plenty of parking. The pub is currently closed for refurbishment until 4th March 2022. The GULL ROCKS & COFFEE BAR is in Holywell at the entrance to the beach. This is a seasonal pub and opens March/April and closes at the end of October. It serves lunch and dinner and local beers. It has a large beer garden with shelter. There is a pay and display car park nextdoor or you can park in the National Trust car park. SHOPS: In our village we have an 'open 'till late' Londis/post office (for your cash) and we have an excellent baker/café and a fish and chip shop. The nearest supermarkets are Morrisons and Lidl in Newquay, which are next to each other and a ten-minute drive. CAR PARKING and NATIONAL TRUST: If you're not a member of the National Trust (NT) you might want to consider joining as there are some fine properties and gardens to visit in Cornwall and many of the beach car parks are NT owned and are free to members. This includes Holywell Bay and nearby Crantock beach and Polly (Porth) Joke. Most Council operated car parks in Newquay are free after 4pm and free all the time in the winter. Also (online) get a Gardeners World 2 for 1 discount card to save money on entry to loads of fabulous gardens in Cornwall. During the Covid epidemic last year some attractions suspended discount deals. Hopefully this will improve in 2022. NIGHTLIFE: Newquay has plenty of nightlife and if you enjoy live music (as we do) then we would recommend Whiskers and the Red Lion on Fridays and Saturdays. Socio is also worth a visit as they too often have bands at the weekend. EATING OUT: There are a great many good places to eat out and amongst our favourites are: The Colonial on Tolcarne Beach Newquay; Lewinnick Lodge, Pentire Newquay; Sundowner music evenings at Lusty Glaze beach Newquay; The Watering Hole in Perranporth; The Beach Hut and Zacry's at Watergate Bay and C-bay in Crantock. Book a table early. SURFING: Our home is a fifteen minute drive from the surfers' favourite Fistral Beach in Newquay and most of our local beaches, including Holywell, have surfing schools and hire shops. Watergate Bay, which is arguably as popular with surfers, is only twenty minutes away where we recommend Xtreme Academy for your surfing l March 2022 Should you arrive by public transport we are more than happy to pick you up for free from Cornwall Airport Newquay, Newquay Bus Station or Newquay Railway Station providing we're available, of course. Please note that on occasion there may be a parking charge to be paid by you. (We may have to suspend this pick-up service if there are additional Covid restrictions) We have a local taxi firm called 'Surf Cabs' and (at the time of writing) a pre-booked return journey to and from Newquay is £15 before 11pm and £19 after 11pm - cheaper than the Newquay firms. There is a bus service from Holywell Bay and Cubert to and from Newquay and Truro. Timetables are available online. A bus back from Holywell Bay to Cubert is approximately £2.50 pp and a bus into Newquay from Cubert is about £4.00 pp and takes about 30 minutes as its route takes it via Crantock. We are very close to the Cornish Coastal Path and so be prepared for some fantastic walks along the cliffs and local beaches. We can provide a local Ordnance Survey map. Cornwall is an all-year-round holiday destination. Winters tend to be mild (we only had one minor frost in 2020 and three in 2021). Summers are generally warm with plenty of sunshine, but being on a peninsula facing the Atlantic we do have plenty of weather! Locally, rain is called 'liquid sunshine' and expect some during your stay, so bring suitable clothing. In the winter Wellington boots are a must when walking the beaches. Remember that wind and light breezes, which we refer to as 'air conditioning', are regular features on the north Cornish coast and it's cooling influence often leads to people accidentally suffering from sunburn. Strong winds and gales result in fantastic sea-scapes! Tide time knowledge in this part of the world can make a whole difference in terms of your safety and to where you might visit on a particular day. We provide a tide timetable in your room. Cheapest petrol locally is at Morrisons in Newquay - less than ten minutes by car. Lidl is nextdoor to Morrisons. We provide visitor packs for guests, which include maps and 'wosson' guides with discount vouchers. (Visitor info packs are late printing this year and we will only be able to supply them when they have been delivered to us.) We have provided a comprehensive room guide. On arrival we will meet you at the front door. We will invite you into our lounge or the garden for a welcoming drink during which time we will maintain social distancing. This will give us the opportunity to explain how we have prepared your accommodation and how we will manage your stay during the Covid epidemic. We will deliver a breakfast hamper into your bathroom the night before. All the foodstuffs ars in sealed containers. Crockery and cutlery are in your room along with kettle, toaster, milk and beverages. Dirty plates, crockery etc are to be placed back in the hamper in the morning and left in the bathroom for us to collect, wash and then return to the bathroom.
