Chawton is a picturesque Hampshire village located in the South Downs National Park. The Garden House is set in 3 acres of mature gardens within walking distance of The Jane Austen Museum, Chawton House Library and Cassandras' Cup Cafe. Set in 3 acres of beautifully maintained historical gardens The Garden House is a comfortable five bedroom family house. Chawton is a small quintessential English village and was home to the novelist Jane Austen who spent the last 8 years of her life in a 17th century house which is now preserved as a museum in her memory. The Garden House was originally the Gardener’s Cottage to Chawton House owned by Jane Austen’s brother. It is located in what was the third walled garden of Chawton House. Guests will have their own bedroom with king size double bed and ensuite bathroom and shower room. This room also has a small single bed. There is a second bedroom also available at additional charge (please enquire) with a standard double bed and adjacent separate bathroom for a party of four. There is a large Drawing Room with open fireplace. Breakfast will be served in the Dining Room. We will welcome guests with tea and biscuits and then are happy that they come and go as they please. Chawton is a small beautiful English village situated 2.5 miles outside the market town of Alton, Hampshire in an area of outstanding natural beauty within the South Downs National Park. The Garden House is within easy walking distance of The Chawton House Library, St. Nicholas' Church, The Jane Austen Museum, Casandra's Cup Cafe and The Greyfriar Public House. Local attractions include the Cathedral City of Winchester 16 miles to the West of the village. Gilbert Whites's House in the neighbouring village of Selborne. The popular Watercress Steam Railway Line runs from Alton to Alresford. Basingstoke and Guildford are in close proximity. The historic naval port of Portsmouth is 30 miles south. Regular trains leave Alton Station to London Waterloo. Alton has regular trains to London Waterloo - 1 hour 10 minutes. Buses from Chawton village to Winchester and Guildford depart regularly. Gatwick and Heathrow airport are both approximately within a 1 hour drive.
