Soren and Sonya first came to Turon Gates in 1972 on a camping trip. They fell in love with its natural beauty and, after 4 days, decided they would love to retire there some day. Their dream was to create a bush retreat close enough to get away for a few days but far enough to leave the hustle and bustle of the city far behind. Each cottage location was carefully selected to afford complete privacy and stunning outlooks over the rolling countryside or over the tranquil river. Sonya makes a mean cappuccino if you would like to drop in and Soren has many stories about the history of the area, the gold rush era and the historic Chinese walls throughout the property. But if you just feel like being alone, the nice thing about Turon Gates is that you never need to see anyone. It's totally up to you. And for the meantime there are not many places where you can get mobile reception at Turon - and that's just the way we like it. The destination is the journey! These are only a few ideas - there is much much more to do... Between Sydney and Lithgow via Katoomba: Leura has beautiful cafes and there is an awesome lolly shop with wall to wall sweets and treats. Jenolan Caves are fascinating. The Hydromajestic is an historic hotel recently renovated and has spectacular views over the Megalong Valley Between Sydney and Lithgow via Bilpin: In and around Bilpin fruit growers allow you to pick your own fruit fresh off the tree. If you don't have time, there are little stalls that pepper the road where you can pick up freshly picked fruit and home made treats. Grass Karting is fun at Kurrajong Heights Grass Karts. From Lithgow to Capertee The Tin Shed at Lithgow has excellent wood fired pizza and great coffee. Stop at the lookout over the widest canyon in the world - the Capertee Valley SHOPPING There is a general store at Capertee (12km away) which stocks the essentials but if you are doing your shopping on the way, we recommend stopping at one of the larger towns - Richmond, Lithgow, Mudgee, Katoomba etc There will be well-graded 12km of dirt road when you turn off the highway. It is safe for 2WD vehicles and as always care should be taken. In the country, we keep to the left hand side of the road, especially when approaching a corner or hill top when the driver can't see the possible oncoming vehicles from the opposite direction. We also have many hiking and biking trails off road. Turon Gates is environmentally friendly and we use only gas and solar energy. Please note there is no mobile phone reception down in the valley and there is no TV, telephone or wifi in the tent for your complete rest and relaxation.
