The Cable Bay Walk is a locally-famous tramp or hike along the cliffs and down through stunning native bush, to the picturesque settlement at Glen Duan and the start of the unique Nelson Boulder Bank. Cable Bay Adventure Park nearby offers e-bikes, quad-bike tours, horse treks, paintball, archery and more. WANT TO RELAX? With no street lighting, strolls at night around Cable Bay offer a truly magnificent, starry sky-scape. You'll find the compact kitchen provides most of the bench-top appliances for your needs, from electric frypan to rice cooker to Nespresso machine and large bench-top oven. The lounge, dining area, bedroom and dressing room have sliding divider doors. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and underfloor heating, and is separate from the dressing room and bath with those VIEWS! You are literally one minute's meander through native bush to our coastal estuary with its abundance of bird life, such as Royal Spoonbills, NZ native pigeons, tuis, fantails, Banded Rail and Fern birds (quite rare!). Parts of the property are steep so You Explore Entirely At Your Own Risk! A delicious complimentary Continental breakfast, delivered daily to your door, provides variety to meet just about every taste. If requested we can (mostly) source fresh local fish, fine wines, hand-crafted local beers and a variety of juices. We also hold a variety of NZ wines and beers as well as frozen pizzas and nibbles (snacks) eg. nuts, chips, crackers & cheeses, salamis, etc, etc. Please consult the list provided. You only need ask and if we can assist, we will! Cable Bay dining out options are limited to the local beach café, open in the summer months only; however a complete menu for snacks, all day breakfast or light meals from Cable Bay Adventure Park is available in the Nest. The Adventure Park is 5 mins. drive from The Nest, and is open all year round. The Cafe makes a delicious variety of Italian pizza, is great for an all day breakfast and other light meals.There is a local shop (5.5 kilometres) for take-aways. We recommend that you visit the supermarkets and gourmet delis and bakeries in Nelson City itself, to stock up on gourmet, locally-sourced award-winning food and beverages. Cheeses, breads, wine, olives, fruits, fish, sushi, croissants... all made here! We only take single party bookings (maximum 2 adults) and in keeping with our own travel preferences, strive to be unobtrusive and leave guests to follow their own time-table, if any. We are of course available to offer information and advice about the Top of the South (Nelson/Able Tasman, Marlborough, Golden Bay, The Lakes) and beyond. We welcome the opportunity to share our local knowledge, be it about local activities (bike trails, short walks, hiking trails, fishing, swimming, diving, wineries, breweries, arts and crafts, places of historical interest, shopping, or places unique to the greater Nelson region. While Cable Bay is a small, cohesive and friendly community, aside from the superb scenery, we would have to say we just love the the absence of close neighbours! In this compact rural, seaside locale you can stroll about your extensive coastal native garden without being accosted by anything other than the prolific bird-life (Kereru, Bell-Birds, Tuis, Heron, etc). Cable Bay ocean beach is particularly popular with families for access to both deep and shallow swimming areas (swimming, boating, fishing, snorkelling and diving). Cable Bay walkway is a moderate fitness walk taking approximately 3 hours, between Cable Bay and The Glen. It is closed for lambing from 1st August to 6th October. Cable Bay Cafe is just an 8-10 minute walk from the Nest and serves great coffee, breakfasts and lunches. It is open from 10.00am -4.00pm Wed. - Sunday in summer. It's easy to enjoy your takeaway coffee or fish and chips sitting on the beach or up the few steps at the end of the beach, while enjoying the land/seascapes or watching the animals grazing nearby. Check out the Cable Bay Adventure Park only 6-8 minutes drive away that offers quad bike self drive tours, sky wire, horse treks, paint ball, an argo etc. They also have a licensed cafe open 9.00-5.00pm daily. Cable Bay Kayaks are based in the bay and provide guided kayaking tours around Pepin Island (and paddle boards). Below the Nest sit on kayaks, and a rowboat are available for your exclusive use at no extra charge, however please be aware that while we provide basic safety equipment, we take NO responsibility for any accidents or injuries resulting from your use of these amenities. Use of bicycles are also Free. In keeping with being a secluded and tranquil rural/coastal environment, there is NO public transport so guests without a vehicle are advised to hire a car in Nelson city (or at the airport some 22 kilometres away). To find The Nest (from the airport), drive towards Nelson along the waterfront (Rocks Road), keeping the sea on your left. Keep bearing left and bypass Nelson city and head North on State Highway 6 in the direction of Picton/Blenheim. After about 20 minutes you will see a signpost on your left directing you to Cable Bay. Set your vehicle trip mileage for 6.82 kilometres and you will find us 6.82 kilometres down this road on the right (look for the number 682 on our letter box). If you find yourself at Hira, a small settlement about 500 metres PAST the Cable Bay turn off, you need to turn around and take the first right on the road back towards Nelson. Free off street parking is of course provided at the Nest. Our focus here at the Nest is to ensure you have a care-free, relaxing and memorable stay so you can continue your travels or return home rested and refreshed.
