Our Boot Store Cottage is located in historical Kensington, one of Adelaide's oldest established villages settled in the 1800's. Now a cosy 1 bedroom home, the cottage was initially a workshop for its original owner, bootmaker Samuel Heanes and was built in 1853. We've decorated the interior with an eclectic mix of things to reflect our travels around Australia and overseas. We have lived here for over ten years, initially in the cottage while building the contemporary extension at the back, which is now where we live. Street parking is usually easily available (out the front of the Bootstore in particular) and, on arrival, you will be shown through the cottage. There is a folder outlining the "perks and quirks" of the cottage for your information, along with some brochures and details of local attractions. We both work from home. Martin has his building design business in his backyard office, while I run my singing/music studio Mondays to Thursdays (from approximately 3:30pm to 7.30pm) in the old boot store next door which has been acoustically treated to keep noise disturbance to a minimum. The cottage kitchen has views to our back garden with bamboo and native trees that run along Second Creek, along with wildlife such as rainbow and musk lorikeets, eastern rosellas, honeyeaters, kookaburras, possums, koalas and we've even had a kangaroo bounce through the backyard! The rear garden (also visible from the cottage kitchen) has views into the creek and Borthwick Park, which has recently undergone a community biodiversity program maintained by volunteer residents. Borthwick Park has a BBQ area for visitors and can be access behind our property via the Laneway alongside the Bootstore shop. Entire 5 room cottage and front and rear courtyard. Free street parking is available. We're happy to interact with our guests from time to time and please, upon booking, let us know the name of who is coming with you if you're not coming alone. Unless away on holidays, one or both of us will be on site most of the time and, if not, we will organise someone to greet you on arrival. There is an outdoor sitting space at the front of the cottage for guests. All areas with views into our backyard have blinds for more privacy if required as we may be pottering in the garden or sitting at the outdoor setting in our rear yard. At times, we will need to maintain the front courtyard during your stay, but will attempt to do so discreetly. Kensington is a quiet, leafy suburb with a 30 minute walk to the city's east end with easy access to public transport. Kensington has many historic buildings and is a peaceful, friendly environment. Apart from its historical charm, Norwood Parade is close by - a known hot spot for its shops, theatre complexes and cafes and is an easy 15 minute stroll from the cottage. Magill Road is also close by with cafes, wine bars, homewares and retro shops to poke around in with Burnside Village also nearby for those in need of some upmarket retail therapy! Along Kensington Road there are supermarkets, The Regal, a quaint art deco picture theatre, and more cafes. The Cottage is situated between Kensington Road and The Parade, both of which provide easy public transport by bus into the city for the various festivals and events that Adelaide is now well known for such as The Fringe, The Adelaide Festival, Tour Down Under, Feast Festival, WOMADelaide, Adelaide Oval events and The Adelaide 500 just to name a few. As we're located at the foot of the hills, there are many walking and biking trails for those who enjoy hiking and riding. There are brochures in the cottage. For more information search "dpti cycling and walking maps". There are also many hotels/restaurants in the immediate area, including The Rising Sun boutique hotel which is very close to home. Please note: *No smoking or burning of incense inside the property ... thank you *The nightly rate is the same regardless of whether there are one or two guests *Stays longer than one month will be considered on discussion.
