Cozy Suite in the Heart of Hyde Park
This quiet, comfortable retreat has lots of extras, but the best part is the location -- just one mile from the FDR site, Vanderbilt Mansion and the Hudson River, 3 miles from The Culinary Institute, 8 from The Walkway Over the Hudson, and 11 from the Town of Rhinebeck. When it's time for relaxing inside, try out the cloud-top queen bed, comfy reading chairs, Keurig (with Peet's coffees), microwave, minifridge, great natural light, seasonal river views and a patio meant for lounging. The main entrance to the home is for guest use only. The suite, just a few steps away, features a small foyer leading to a sleeping/living space outfitted with comfortable armchairs, reading lamps, TV with Roku, desk/table and chairs, a "mini kitchenette" and an adjoining private bath with tub/shower and vanity space. Four windows in the sleeping/living room and one in the bath provide excellent natural light and wooded views. Guests are invited to enjoy the backyard and patio facing the river and mountains, where you're likely to see deer, bunnies, wild turkeys, and dazzling sunsets. Creature comforts include: Queen bed with cloud topper Desk/table with ample surface for working or dining and stocked with desk supplies, placemats and napkins Seating space with two comfortable chairs, reading lamp, side table and pouf stool TV (basic cable and ROKU with Netflix and Amazon Prime) WiFi "Mini kitchenette" with small fridge, microwave and Keurig and stocked with Peet's coffees in dark, medium and light roasts; caffeinated and herbal teas; dishes, glasses, cutlery and utensils Central heating and air-conditioning Private bath with shower/tub, vanity, lighted makeup mirror Essential oils and diffuser Backup toiletries Terry cloth bathrobe and slippers Hardwood floors in main space and foyer, tile in bathroom A charming brick patio enclosed by a white picket fence and set with Adirondack chairs, a bistro table with chairs, and sun umbrella. The woods in the backyard are on a hillside sloping down to the river. The home's front door, with a keypad lock, is for guests use only. Once inside, it’s just 8 steps to the guest suite, which has its own lockable door. Parking is in the driveway and there's a wooded backyard and flower-trimmed patio for guest use. After welcoming you and making sure you're comfortably settled in, I'm readily available for assistance. At the same time, I like to respect everyone’s privacy. Please be aware that there are two resident cats. While they're not allowed in the guest suite, one is especially friendly; you may have to shoo her away from your door when you're on the way out. Known as "The Village," my part of Hyde Park is a residential neighborhood bordered by the FDR and Vanderbilt sites, the Hudson River and the town center/Route 9. My street is a quiet cul-de-sac. In addition to its world-famous sites, Hyde Park has lots more to explore. History buffs will find traces of many periods, from the Revolutionary War and Turn of the (19th) Century, to the Thirties, Forties, and Fifties. The town offers a self-guided walking tour that takes in the field stone historic post office, library and elementary school, all crafted during the New Deal with design input from FDR; an early train station that was a whistle stop for FDR (it's a train museum now), and more. For outdoor enthusiasts, a kayak rental is just a few streets away and parks and good walking trails abound. Folks with an affinity for the Fifties will love our drive-in theatre, vintage-y diner (made famous by Guy Fieri on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives"), roller skating center and Dairy Queen. We also have a seven-screen movie house (with small-town prices), a locally-owned craft brewery, a handful of small owner-operated restaurants (yummy NY-style pizza, delicious Mexican, sushi and Italian), and several antique shops, plus an excellent wine shop with a knowledgeable staff and a beverage store with a large selection of beers; both stores are favorites of CIA instructors and students. Many things to do in Hyde Park are within walking distance. To venture farther away, there's Lyft and Uber and, at the Poughkeepsie Train Station, you'll find Zip Cars, taxis and county buses, but you'll find it most convenient with a car, especially if you want to explore Rhinebeck (11 miles north), Poughkeepsie (8 miles south), local wineries, orchards and other surrounding attractions. I don't serve breakfast but there are nearby places that do, several in walking distance. Everybody loves The Eveready, a Fifties-style diner that's been featured on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" and is beloved by locals for its ample breakfasts (lunches, dinners and late night bites, are good, too). The suite has a "mini kitchenette" with fridge, microwave, Keurig, dishes, glasses, cutlery, a toaster by request, just about everything but the kitchen sink, but not to worry, I do your dishes. You'll find plenty of fun things to see and do within walking distance or less than a 3-mile drive: FDR and Vanderbilt sites Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill home The Culinary Institute of America Kayak lessons/rental Good walking trails Drive-in movie theatre (one of only 350 or so left in the US) Seven-screen movie theatre with first-run movies and small-town prices The Eveready Diner, a retro- style local favorite featured on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" Dairy Queen; McDonald's; a frozen yogurt shop; a good locally-owned Mexican restaurant; and a great NY-style pizza place that delivers Roller skating center Craft brewery and restaurant with live music Excellent wine & spirits shop Beverage store with an extensive selection of beers Antique shops Emergency Medical Center (not fun, but good to know it's there) The Walkway Over the Hudson, for fabulous walking and views, is about 8 miles away in Poughkeepsie The Dutchess Tourism website is an excellent resource for things to see and do.
