Cool space with lots of nooks and crannies. 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, open floor plan, sleeps 9. Close to hiking, crafts, Berea College, with beautiful views, and within a short drive to lots of central Kentucky destinations. Our family home, aka the "Big Hill House" was the first ever built by Richard Martin, a green designer/builder in the Berea area for more than 30 years who had a reputation for building high-quality energy efficient homes. The home features passive solar design with windows spanning the entire south side of the home with loads of natural light. The open floor plan includes two loft bedrooms that overlook the living and family rooms and is just loaded with nooks and crannies. If you are looking for a unique place to stay, with beautiful views, close to hiking and outdoor activities, and within a short drive to lots of central Kentucky destinations, this is it! Guests have access to the house and grounds. Outbuildings are off limits. Upon booking, we will be sending you the electronic version of the rental agreement as a separate email. If the signed rental agreement is not returned within seven days, your reservation will be canceled. We will also provide you with a guide to the house which includes all the information you'll need for your stay, including information on area attractions, at that time. The house is located just outside of Berea. Known as the "Folk Arts and Crafts capital of Kentucky", Berea is home to a thriving population of weavers, instrument makers, furniture artisans, jewellery designers, glass workers, potters, painters, sculptors, and musicians. The story of Berea’s artisan community is interwoven with the historic Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South. Berea has a longstanding tradition of diversity, social justice, environmental responsibility, and community service. Both college and town are committed to the practice of sustainability and conservation, so you can see why Mr. Martin's skills were in high demand. Berea College owns and maintains over 8,000 acres of forest, including numerous hiking trails within a few miles of the house. Berea is located in central Kentucky, 40 miles south of Lexington, on the border of Bluegrass Region and the Cumberland Plateau in the foothills of Kentucky's Appalachian mountains. Berea is located in the southern end of Madison County, which is one of the fastest growing areas in Kentucky. It is rich in heritage and history. The County is unique in that it has two townships, Berea, and the larger, Richmond, just 12 miles to the north. The County sits next to Fayette County with the Kentucky River as its border. The northern end of the county just is minutes away from Lexington. You'll need a car to get around. In case it's an issue, we want to make you aware that both the front and rear staircases are a bit on the steep side. Also, the rear staircase is far more narrow than average. All the regular beds are on the second floor, with the exception of the sleeper sofas. Also, the house has several different levels so it's less than ideal for anyone with any kind of accessibility issues.
