Crete built the first European civilization over 4000 years ago with the Minoans. It’s steeped in legends and traditions, not forgetting its golden beaches and clear blue seas. Its historical attractions, to mention a few, include the sites of Knossos and Agia Triada and not forgetting the Hall of Frescoes found in the Archaeological museum of Irakleio. Crete also boasts one of the longest gorges in Europe, the gorge of Samaria. The gorge is within the National Park of Samaria and is 16 km long and will take the average walker approximately six hours to complete. Crete and its 300 days of sunshine per year, enjoy one of the healthiest climates in Europe. The island straddles two climatic zones, the Mediterranean and the North African. Spring and autumn temperatures reach the high 20s (Celsius) and in the heart of summer temperatures can reach into the high 30s (Celsius). The rainy season is predominately in the winter months and it is not uncommon for Crete to have no rain between the months of May and September. Rethymno Rethymno is Crete’s third largest town, conveniently placed in the middle of the north coast between Irakleio and Chania, making it an ideal base to explore the island, just a forty minute drive to the south coast. Rethymno boasts having the largest Venetian fortress on the island and the old town has a colourful mix of architecture which has basically remained intact since the Renaissance, with its beautifully decorated piazzas and superb fountains. An evening stroll through the old town’s narrow lanes will be an unforgettable experience.
