Disconnect to reconnect: relax and have fun on Nevis, naturally!
Our Morningstar Cottage is your place to relax, connect with nature and experience an authentic Caribbean home. This delightful Nevis home is located in the cool hills near Morningstar, Nevis. The house is a wooden structure built in the 1990’s in the style common to many of the island’s oldest dwellings: high, exposed beam ceilings, wrap-around porches and wide open windows. These features create spaces where the distinction between indoors and out becomes a beautiful blur, and you can embrace your connection with the lush flora and lively fauna that surround you. The interior of the house is furnished with local antiques as well as pieces crafted on site that emulate the island’s traditional furniture design: gingerbread details, four-poster beds and tapered-leg nightstands, all of which creates the atmosphere of an original Caribbean house. The villa has a large gallery porch covered by an overhanging roof. Inside, there's a great room for living, dining, and cooking. The kitchen is equipped with a propane stove, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, coffee maker and toaster. (Pro-tip: starting your morning in the hammock with a cup of coffee while contemplating Mt. Nevis is inspirational). The dining table comfortably seats up to 6. Off the great room are two main bedrooms, each with Nevisian-style, hand-crafted, queen size, four poster beds elegantly draped with mosquito netting. A third, smaller bedroom can be used as a single bunkroom or is useful for storage of luggage and other items. The tiled bathroom is equipped with an ample shower. BUT, if it’s a hot soak you desire, the al-fresco clawfoot tub is ready for you on the back porch! Or relax in your hammock or the outdoor living area on your side porch while contemplating the hummingbirds, the palms, the shape of that puffy cloud against that bluest of skies, the sounds of the Caribbean breeze. The front porch offers you the perfect view of your mountain, nicely framed by a pair of tall Norfolk Pines. From here, you can appreciate the lush green that covers this dormant volcano known as Mount Nevis - the symbol of our island. There are organized hiking groups that climb to the top of Mount Nevis, and also hike other nature trails. We are located less than a mile from The Hermitage Plantation Hotel, the oldest wood-frame building on the island. A visit there provides you with a great opportunity to compare construction similarities between your cottage and their historic structures (and their signature rum punch is considered by many to be the best around). You will also be very near to our island’s breathtaking Botanical Gardens, which offer an extensive collection of native and exotic plants in a beautiful setting. After your tour of the Gardens, climb the stairs up to the elevated porch and sit at your table for a delightful lunch at Oasis in the Garden’s, an excellent restaurant serving Thai cuisine. Our family and friends still aren’t sure which we like the most – the food (and drink), the service or the view. Let us know what you think. Morningstar Cottage is set in an area that feels secluded, but is not remote. So, you can enjoy your privacy while home, but be less than 15 minutes from Pinney’s Beach, a popular (but not crowded) spot with great swimming and many excellent choices for food and drink (which, as is mandatory, must include the world famous “Killer Bee” at Sunshine’s). There are a number of other wonderful beaches and places of interest all around the island that are beautiful, fun and easy to get to. Car rental is available; can be booked through us and is recommended, but there are also mini-buses zipping around all the time if you want a more immersive experience. Taxis for hire are also readily available. But, if you decide on a car rental, a jeep-like car (usually a RAV4 or Sidekick-type) is really needed for ours and a number of other bumpy roads on the island, as long as you think you can remember to KEEP LEFT! (as in drive on the left side of the road) AND as long as you don’t mind giving the right of way to the donkeys (and monkeys and sheep and goats) that roam freely around the island. There is far too much to see and do on Nevis to list it all here, but we live in the house just beyond the trees and down the hill from your cottage and can help if you need anything. We love Nevis. We think you will too. For more details, contact us by email.
