Great Mackerel Beach is a small coastal hamlet located directly opposite Palm Beach on the western foreshores of Pittwater. It’s water access only. Catch the Palm Beach ferry (30 minutes), water taxi (5 minutes) or take your own boat. Surrounded by National park and a long stretch of sandy beach, there are few communities that are so close to the city yet give you a feeling of being a millions miles away. Sydney’s best kept secret, Mackerel beach, with only 40 full-time residents, no cars, no roads and no shops, is paradise found. Getting to Mackerel beach is part of the fun and adventure. Leave the car at Palm Beach and board the ferry. When you arrive at Mackerel beach, load up the house wheelbarrow with your supplies and Mackerel beach house (eco retreat) is only a short 5 minute stroll away along a flat path. Once you arrive, sit back and enjoy the privacy, seclusion and abundance of wildlife. If you feel like exploring, beach-hop between the local bays, go walking in the surrounding National Park to secluded beaches, ancient Aboriginal carving sites, the Basin lagoon and take in breathtaking lookouts including the local favourite – champagne rock. For a leisurely stroll, take in the valley behind Mackerel beach where you will come across native wildlife including lizards, wallabies and bush turkeys or walk along Mackerel’s beautiful sandy foreshore and enjoy a swim or snorkel in the crystal-clear protected waters of Pittwater. For more adventure, you can fish off the wharf, or take a kayak or boat, or hire your own tinny from Palm Beach, to explore Pittwater’s many coves and bays. If you feel like some retail therapy or a great coffee, take the ferry to Palm Beach. From here you can also trek up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse, visit some of the famous locations from Home and Away, dine at the local restaurants, bars and cafes or browse the shops, galleries and Palm Beach markets (on set days). Avalon village is just a 5-minute drive away. Here you can restock supplies at the local Woolworths and bottle stores, explore the many shops, restaurants and bars or visit the surf beach or take in a movie.
