Treehaven: circa 1825 farm house
In this quirky 1825 post and beam farmhouse, the emphasis is on simplicity as opposed to luxury. The owner's house adjoins but is separate from it. A solitary writer can work quietly on a project, or cyclists, wedding attendees, and Middlebury College families can connect to Breadloaf programs, graduations, skiing, hiking, foliage, mountains and lakes, and local communities. It's close to Middlebury College, Brandon, Breadloaf , Lake Dunmore, the Snow Bowl and the Long Trail. This is a very old house, filled with light and space. The open floor plan features simple period furniture, irregular wide pine floors, and a large field stone fireplace. It is set back from a dirt road and has a long view of the Adirondacks. The lawn is green in summer and cows moo nearby. The floors have wide boards and are creaky. It sleeps eight in four bedrooms. There are three four-poster twin beds, a single sleigh bed, two double beds, and a queen-sized bed. The third (full bed) and fourth (twin beds) bedrooms have no door between them due to the fire code. Guests may use the original house including living and dining area, kitchen, bedrooms and baths. Linens are supplied. There is a place to sit outside on the former porch site under mature maple trees. The owners live in a connected but separate building. We will greet you as close to your arrival time as is convenient for both of us, or we will give you instructions as to how to get in on your own. Then as needed we will arrive to explain any unclear details of operation. We are generally next door and can be reached by phone or text. Please communicate right away if there is any problem. The farm is convenient to the Long Trail, Lake Dunmore, Fern Lake, Breadloaf, Middlebury College, hiking rails and beautiful towns and countryside nearby. In winter, Bolton Valley, Middlebury’s Snow Bowl and Breadloaf cross-country are nearby for downhill or cross country skiing. There is plenty of parking at the house, with room to maneuver a boat trailer. We try to keep a Vermont travel guide book available. The closest large grocery store is approximately 5 miles away in Brandon and the Middlebury Co-op is 12 miles away. The house is heated with an effective wood stove and a cold climate heat pump. Old fashioned ventilators allow heat to rise to two of the second floor bedrooms so In winter be prepared with a warm bathrobe and slippers. The heat pump does a good job and the wood stove is cozy. Heat from the oil furnace can be added if needed. Supplemental electric heaters are available upstairs. Air conditioning is generated by the heat pump and is less effective upstairs, so there are fans with which one can draw the cooler air up.. There is WIFI but no TV. There is a large shower with a seat, but there is no bathtub. The on-demand water heater serves both houses.
