Experience a bit of the laid back life Batticaloa has to offer in this basic but nice house near the lagoon. A great place to use as starrting point for trips to Batti Town, Kallady/Navaledy and Pasikudah, or to enjoy the sun(set) from the rooftop. The house is located in Paalameenmadu, a quiet neighborhood in Batticaloa and a very nice place to be. Located near the Lighthouse area, guests can take boatrides across the lagoon, visit the small fishmarket in the morning and see (and hear!) the many birds around the house throughout the day. The house itself was entirely wiped out by the Boxing Day Tsunami, but was recently rebuilt. So recently, in fact, that it is fair to say that the finishing touches still have to be done (but we're not talking about the Hitlon anyway, so who cares). It's a nice, two-story house that towers over the much smaller houses in the neighborhood. The bedrooms share a bathroom per floor, and downstairs there's a living room, a dining room, a kitchen and a place to park cars. And, much like a cherry on top, the rooftop terrace provides a great place to relax and enjoy the sun(set). Mr. Thambirajah, the owner of this home, was born in Batticaloa but now lives in Europe. It is Mr. Selvaraja (see photo) who will welcome and take care of you. He speaks a bit of English and can arrange food, transport and even some local activities, such as a boat ride through the lagoon. In case you get stuck in translation you can always call us. If any town in Sri Lanka can call itself 'Lagoon Town' it's Batticaloa, or 'Batti' as the locals call it. Believed to be founded by the ancient Vedda people and subsequently colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch and English, Batti has tons of history, paired with an abundance of natural beauty and things to do. The reason why Batti isn't visited much is because it's quite a trip to get there, it's was one of the main hotspots during the decades-long conflict and it was one of the places hardest hit by the Boxing Day Tsunami. A true Neverbeen location...
