Washitsu.Casa volunteer program - your help counts
IMPORTANT Please read the whole extended version of this description before you book or make an inquiry. With this category you pay a minimum rate in exchange for helping us out by keeping the place clean and/or working on charitable projects. If it is a good match you can stay longer. Our Washitsu.Casa has a FANTASTIC Mt Fuji style view, weather permitting... The addition of small lakes right by the house and a distant waterfall adds to the magic. To increase your likelihood of enjoying the fantastic view, longer stays are recommended. Great restaurants, a club and the National Park close by. In this section information about buses, including FREE buses, routes, bicycle trails and parking... ARRIVAL: IF you arrive by your OWN OR a RENTED CAR It takes about 3 hours to drive from Reykjavik. You can choose between two different mountain passes without a time penalty. One way is to take route 54 all the way to and continue on route 574. Another way is to take an earlier pass route 56 and continue on route 54 on the Northern side of the Peninsula. The last part is always route 574. The third choice is to continue on route 574 on the south side of the peninsula which bypasses mountain passes and takes you through the National Park. This route is a bit longer. We recommend route 56 mountain pass depending on road conditions. RENTAL CAR ONE WAY. Some of the car rentals offer a service where they can bring the car to our place or you can return it at our place for a fixed extra charge. BUS SERVICES FROM REYKJAVIK OR OTHER PLACES You can use the Icelandic bus system to get to our street in Rif. The bus system called (Website hidden by Airbnb) was originally the Reykjavik City bus system that was extended into the country. You need to change the bus twice but do not worry the buses wait for each other. LANDING STRIP FOR A PRIVATE PLANE There is an official landing strip within walking distance. So if you have a private plane or you hire a plane it is one more choice of how to get to the Washitsu.Casa if you have the resources Superb FREE PARKING also for larger vehicles There is plenty of free parking on both side of the street. You can park your car, SUV, Caravan, Mini-bus, Bus or Long Vehicle for free. DRIVING THROUGH A BIRD SANCTUARY In summer from May to August. There are a lot of birds on the local road. Just drive carefully and enjoy this unique experience. GETTING AROUND LOCALLY: FREE local buses The school bus is free and available for all if space allows many times a day. It stops just a few meters away at the bus shelters. You can use it to get to Hellisandur and Olafsvik. Where you can shop groceries, go swimming (Olafsvik), go to Restaurants and Cafes (note that not all of them are open in Winter) The BUS system that takes you to Reykjavik and other far away places can also take you to other places not so far away such as Grundarfjordur and Stykkisholmur. At least you could use that in one direction and .... HITCHHIKE It is a nice way to get around and to get to know new people. Depending on the distance you would like to cover you might want to start early so that you are not traveling to late when less cars are around The responsibility to select the right person to volunteer lies much with you yourself because if volunteering with us does not suit you it surely does not suit us either, because we only want to have happy volunteers. So if you are considering volunteering you really need to understand what is on offer and if that is suitable for you and if you have what it takes. You must be able and willing to help about 3 hours per day. (This does not include cooking and your fair share of cleaning after volunteers) Depending on the situation you can help by cleaning, deep cleaning, with creative work perhaps based on your particular skill set and communication -in particular finding contacts and sometimes with translations. For translations you need to be fluent in English or German, plus in a third language. This place is not for anybody who smokes, uses drugs or needs alcohol. If you are not serious about volunteering DO NOT book this category. This is not a cheap place to stay except for true volunteers. More information about the surrounding area including services, free local bus and how to get here can be found under my profile guidebooks here on Airbnb. To let us know you have read this section please message us with the words "Read the whole section and I am the right type of person and truly willing and able to help" or write the word "hjalpsamur" or the number 67. But only if you have truly read the previous section and think it is a good match.
