Excellent quality tap water thru Rwd #12 (Not private well water). The property is located on a paved road and a gravel driveway down into the valley. During snow/ice, guests may be required to be shuttled to/from the higher entrance area near the main road. Check-in 4 p.m. - 10 p.m., no earlier check-ins. Please exercise caution when enjoying the peaceful acreage in this rugged valley. Please stay on maintained trails and obey all signs. Trail maps are provided. Other guests will be staying on the retreat grounds and all are required to abide by rules of quiet and respect for others. The grounds are nearly 100% wooded with old growth oaks, elms, hickories, walnuts, cedars, and many other varieties. You will find yourself renewed after experiencing all the valley has to offer. Note: Under Kansas law, there is no liability for an injury or death of a participant in a registered agritourism activity conducted at this registered agritourism location if such injury or death results from the inherent risks of such agritourism activity. Inherent risks of agritourism activities include, but shall not be limited to, the potential of you as a participant to act in a negligent manner that may contribute to your injury or death. You are assuming the risk of participating in this registered agritourism activity. We love to meet our guests, but your privacy and renewal time is our priority. You may see us when outdoors. Our residence is located in the opposite end of the retreat house. The utility and storage rooms provide a buffer between the suites. As possible, we will limit maintenance activities while guests are enjoying the property. While friendly pets live on the property, they are never allowed into the guest suite. The retreat property includes the heavily wooded hills that surround the valley providing an unusual amount of seclusion and peacefulness. You may see other guests and/or the owners when you are outside. Because of limited space in the valley, trailers are not permitted without prior review by the owners. You will need your vehicle to access the surrounding historic cities of Fort Leavenworth, Atchison, and Weston, Mo. Fort Leavenworth, Atchison, and downtown Leavenworth are 10 to 15 minutes away. It is 30 minutes to the Legends or Zona Rosa shopping centers, the KS Speedway, CommunityAmerica Ballpark, Schlitterbaun water park, Hollywood Casino, SportingKC soccer park, and KC International Airport. Most all attractions in the KC metro area are within an hour drive. Attention bicyclists: the surrounding countryside contains some of the most beautiful and challenging roads in the state. Both gravel and road riders will enjoy the offerings. Your host, an experienced biker, can offer suggested routes. Bring your own bike - or the local Sante Fe Trail Bicycle Shop offers reasonably-priced daily rentals - and they even deliver. They have top quality road and mountain bike offerings. Welcome to the Hidden Valley Wilderness Retreat! You will be hard pressed to find anywhere a more remote and peaceful location so close to a major metropolitan area. This property was the vision of a local priest and monk who found among the 32 acres of old growth trees, hills, and streams the inspiration for personal and spiritual growth, writing books, reconnecting with nature, and entertaining many guests. The rustic house was developed in multiple stages. The retreat house was originally built with inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright's line homes which allowed an interaction with nature. It was designed with 2 separate living areas, plus a private guest suite. The many windows were designed to bring the surrounding beauty of nature inside. It is the vision of the current owners to add additional units so that more guests may enjoy this unique and sacred property. Food: No food or drink service at retreat. A full kitchen with refrigerator (icemaker in freezer), stove/oven, microwave, coffeemaker, and sink is included. Groceries can be purchased in town. Common cookware and tableware is provided. Nearby Leavenworth and Atchison have a wide variety of national chain and local mom and pop dining establishments. Communication note: due to the remoteness of the valley, connectivity with the outside world is limited. Please read and understand the following notes below. Internet note: Satellite Internet service provided does not support streaming movies, video, & music. Please download these prior or bring dvd's with you. Service may support vpn, if not too data intensive. It sometimes supports voice communications. Due to data caps, please limit online activity to email, social media, and basic browsing. TV note: Satellite TV service provided by DirectTV. The living room TV has a built-in blu-ray dvd player. Phone note: we are not aware of any mobile carriers with full coverage in the valley. Voice and data communications are not usually available. Texting may be spotty, depending on carrier. A land line is available for emergency and short calls. Please ask hosts if needed.
