Star Valley and Thayne, WY are beautiful and rich in history. Star Valley was inhabited mainly by Shoshone Indians in the summer and fall months until the early 19th century. The natives were drawn to the valley for its abundant game and the pure salt deposits found near the present town of Auburn and also to the South of Afton, Wyoming there are more renowned salt deposits. Explorers are known to have traveled through the area as early as 1812, seeking new routes to the West Coast. Canadian and American trappers followed, frequenting the area through the 1840s. The 1850s and 1860s saw many emigrants passing through the upper Star Valley area via the Lander Road on the Oregon Trail. White settlement of the area did not begin in earnest, though, until the late 1870s when LDS Apostles Moses Thatcher and Brigham Young, Jr. chose the valley for colonization. Archibald Gardner and members of his extended family arrived in 1889, building and operating five mills of various types in the valley. Wyoming's Newest Scenic Byway! An 80 mile stretch of U.S. 89 in Lincoln County has gained official recognition as the Star Valley Scenic Byway. The south end of the byway is milepost 54.9 where U.S. 89 crosses the Idaho state line a few miles north of Geneva Junction, Idaho., It continues from there at first east, and then north as it climbs Salt Canyon to the 7610foot summit of Salt River Pass. From the summit, U.S. 89 continues generally north as it descends into Star Valley, continuing through the communities of Smoot, Afton, Grover, Thayne and Etna before reaching Alpine. There, the byway continues to the east as U.S. 26-89 into Snake River Canyon to its northernmost point at the Lincoln-Teton county line about nine miles south of Hoback Junction. Visit the Intermittent Spring up Swift Creek Canyon, just 5 miles east of Afton! "The spring that breathes" - The Periodic spring is the largest of three intermittent springs in the world. From late August to May, the flow cycles on and off at regular, predictable intervals. The spring runs up to 100 cubic feet per second of clear, ice cold water for about 18 minutes. The water then begins to subside and gradually ceases altogether for 15-20minutes. Grover Park & Willow Creek - This scenic drive begins 5 miles north of Afton in Grover. This is a nice place for a picnic, enjoy the scenery and see some wildlife. Strawberry Creek Reservoir - 12 miles north of Afton in Bedford, is a lake which was created in the early 1950’s to store water for the hydro-electric power plant. The geology exposed setting is striking. There is good hiking trail that extends beyond the reservoir. Take your lunch and camera. FISHING:Star Valley has more fishable trout streams you can drive to than any where else in the nation. Several areas have been designated along the Salt River for public access to good fishing holes. The Greys River and little Greys River are beautiful mountain fresh water streams with roads running alongside the streams for 70 miles. All the streams and rivers yield fish. Native cutthroat trout identified by orange slashes under their gills and rainbow trout and mountain white fish all make a fine meal. The average length of the game fish is from 10 to 14 inches. They strike hard and give the angler a good battle. Sporting goods stores in Alpine, Thayne, or Afton sell resident and nonresident licenses. Auburn Fish Hatchery: Situated 15 miles west of Grover, the Hatchery is open to visitors 8:00am - 4:30pm, seven days a week. It hatches eggs and cares for fish after they have hatched. The Hatchery accounts for the highest production of Cutthroat and Mackinaw Trout in Wyoming plus they raise Brook and Lake Trout of which over 50,000 are planted each year. ELK REFUGE: This elk feeding ground is one mile south of Alpine. A large number of elk are feed from November until May. This is a 1,000 head management unit & (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)les of hay are fed during the season. This feed ground is managed by the Wyoming Game and Fish and this site was selected in the 1940’s as a permanent feed ground. Feeding is generally done in the morning and is a good time to watch the elk move around through the six-foot fence.
