The main attraction has got to be the waterfront - with lovely walks/cycling along the river towards Mersea island, as well as sailing, fishing, canoeing etc. During warmer months there's a foot ferry over to Rowhedge, where there is a waterfront pub. Over the years Wivenhoe has attracted many creative types (including Francis Bacon, whose estate still owns a small property in the town) and it has several art galleries as well as temporary art related events throughout the year. Historically, the town was known for fishing and boat building (and smuggling) - there are still a few fishermen and if you time it right you can buy fresh fish off the boats when they dock. Theres also small boat building museum. Wivenhoe is a 6 minute train ride to Colchester, which is a large bustling town with lots of history including a castle and roman walls, surprisingly varied shopping, a theatre, 2 cinemas (including Curzon), lots of pubs, bars and restaurants. The famous Colchester zoo is a short drive away. In the other direction is the sea, about 20 mins train or drive away are the seaside towns of Frinton, Clacton, Brightlingsea and Walton. Constable country is on your doorstep, with many beautiful old villages to explore. You dont need a car in Wivenhoe, with fast trains to London (approx 1 hour), a 6 minute train to nearby Colchester, and only about 20 minutes to the seaside resorts of Frinton, Clacton and Walton. The station is only a 3 minutes gentle stroll from the property. The deli, a chippy, restaurants and pubs are all within very short walking distance too. However, there is parking for 3 cars infront of the property, and to reach the Zoo, Brightlingsea or Constable Country you need to drive. The house is next to a family friendly pub so occasionally it can be a bit noisy in some rooms
