Luxurious Dorset village suite for two. Quality conversion of a listed stone barn into a completely equipped ground floor self-catering suite in the Dorset AONB. A couple of miles south west of Dorchester Washing Pool Barns are in the heart of Martinstown village, just a one minute walk from the local pub and maybe five minutes walk to the village store and post office. Bridleways, cycle routes and public footpaths are on the doorstep with the Jurassic coastline around five miles further south. Washing Pool House is a listed Elizabethan farmhouse with adjacent barns. As is typical in this part of Dorset the dairy farmer sold off the original village farmhouse and buildings some time ago and built himself more modern barns and a home outside the village. The old farmhouse and barns have just undergone a complete renovation with premium quality fittings; the farmhouse is our home and the stone barn now houses two completely self contained holiday suites, the Cowshed and the Hayloft. The Cowshed is a ground floor suite with french doors on to the garden. It has a cooking/dining/lounge area fully equipped with double oven, hob, dishwasher, washer/dryer and pod coffee maker. The living area has a fireplace with wood burning stove and two over-size leather snuggler chairs. The bedroom area has a super king size, handmade Vispring bed with Egyptian cotton linen and down duvet. From the bedroom there is a bathroom with tub and large walk-in shower. The bed can be split into twins and a synthetic duvet supplied on request. SARS Cov-2 We are complying with all Government guidelines and will not be open until the Government says it is safe to open. For guest safety we will be introducing a two day gap between all bookings, introducing contact-less check-in and asking guests to strip their bed linen on departure. We will be in the farmhouse close by. We are located in the most beautiful area of Dorset; Maiden Castle and Hardys Monument with its superb views of Chesil Beach and out to sea are just some of the walks from the front door. The village of Martinstown, or more formally Winterbourne St Martinstown, was the birthplace of Nelson’s Admiral Hardy and his towering hilltop monument, just outside the village, offers panoramic views of Chesil Beach, the Isle of Portland, across the Dorset AONB and on a clear day as far as Start Point, Devon. To the east of the village lies the English Heritage site of Maiden Castle, one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe, a foot path leads from the gate to the castle. The National Cycle Network Route 2 runs through the village. Martinstown is on the outskirts of Dorchester, the county town and a market town. Dorchester is the Roman heart of Dorset boasts a rich heritage and is scattered with visible remnants of its ancient origins, from an impressive Roman villa to a Neolithic henge. Flanked by water meadows and riverside walks to the north Dorchester’s pretty shopping streets still follow the original Roman layout. Dorchester was home to the celebrated author, Thomas Hardy, whose novels Tess of the d’Urbervilles and The Mayor of Casterbridge were both based on the town. The Thomas Hardy trail takes you through Hardy’s Wessex visiting many of the villages and town that were the inspiration to his novels. Going south from the village you quickly reach the Jurassic Coast, World Heritage Site, a hugely diverse and beautiful landscape underpinned by incredible geology of global importance. Some 4 miles south of the village is the huge sweeping form of Chesil Beach stretching for 17 miles along the Jurassic Coast. Within a very few miles the neighbourhood offers plenty more to see and do, including Prince Charles’ Poundbury model town, Hardy's Cottage, Dorchester Museums, Athelhampton, South Dorset Ridgeway, Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Gardens, the seaside resort of Weymouth and Portland. and more. Also, within easy reach are Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door, West Bay and Lyme Regis. There is a limited bus service through the village but a car (or a bike) is considered essential.
