The center of Grou is surrounded by water. This village is alive! Throughout the year, with more than 50 shops and 20 catering establishments, a thriving business climate with a rich history and culture, Grou is therefore the Hoofddorp of Friesland 12 months a year. Culture and History Grou was originally an early medieval mound village in the Low Middle of Friesland with an agricultural character. Thanks to its central location with numerous water connections, it was able to develop into a trading and shipping settlement from the 15th century. This water-rich history is still central and gives a walk through the village an extra dimension with small picturesque shopping streets, more than 42 national monuments, its own village archive and a bunker, a true museum showpiece. Here you will discover more than just the water sports village. Here you will discover the Frisian culture, you will get to know the authors of the Frisian National Anthem, the origin of Skûtsjesilen, Sint Piter, 'wood and water' and much more. Grou: A character of its own Grou is a village with its own character. Active, cozy and quirky. Here we do not celebrate 'Sinterklaas' but Sint Piter and this saintly man does not come in December, but in February. The only village where a constant growth in society can still be seen. It's buzzing, it's alive. No village in Friesland where so many activities and events take place as in Grou. Here you don't buy a house in the old center as a tourist, but as a resident. With the destination "permanent habitation", the village also lives in winter. The strength of the character in this village lies in the active and positive inhabitants.
