One of the country's oldest markets, first recorded in 1254, is held in Bakewell every Monday. nearby is Chatsworth House, first built by Bess of Hardwick, home of the Duke of Devonshire and where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. Attractions and nearby amenities The village of Over Haddon is an excellent base to enjoy the walks and scenery of the Peak District. Walks can be as relaxing or as strenuous as you like. Take an amble around Ham Park and Dovedale or Hinkey Hollow Woods, or clamber around the White Peak countryside, it’s up to you. Lover’s Leap old fossils If you go for a walk in Dovedale valley, look out for the limestone promontory known as Lover’s Leap. The stone steps to the top were built by Italian prisoners in the Second World War. Stanton Moor and the Nine Ladies stone circle is well worth a visit, with many Bronze Age relics and burial mounds overlooking Stanton in Peak as well as the Wye and Derwent valleys. Often named the UK’s favourite country house, Chatsworth House is just a short drive from the cottage. You could spend a day exploring the house itself, but spare time to wander around the gardens too – all 105 acres of them! The market town of Bakewell is just up the road. Every Monday is market day, with furious bidding taking place at the livestock market too. Haddon Hall offers a wonderful day out, with elegant gardens and a perfectly kept house that dates back to the Middle Ages.
