Located on the banks of the River Otter in East Devon, the Old Chapel is the perfect romantic getaway. It’s open plan design with gallery bedroom makes it the ideal accommodation for couples. Steeped in history and surrounded by wildlife, it sits within its own access and garden in the extensive grounds of Feniton Mill and within easy reach of the many attractions and wonderful countryside that Devon has to offer. The Old Chapel was built in 1850 by the former mill owner, and has recently been renovated with nods to its historical past and décor that represents the setting and ecclesiastical heritage. With its open plan setting and large kitchen window with views out to the garden and field beyond, the chapel offers the perfect romantic getaway, combining hints of the contemporary with a decadent tone. The landing gallery bedroom has a king size bed and balconette overlooking the kitchen below. There is a contemporary shower room located on the ground floor and a walk in utility cupboard under the stairs housing the washing machine. The Old Chapel forms part of Feniton Mill grounds, which occupy both sides of the River Otter in the hamlet of Fenny Bridges. Whilst historically used as grazing land, since we moved here in 2019, we have embarked on a plan to re-wild; aiming to create wooded areas and supporting the local wildlife and natural environment. With its own gated access, the chapel is nestled into the banks of the river bridge and enjoys ample parking, from where the chapel garden continues down to the river front and weir. The garden area has recently been planted with trees and shrubs and there is also a substantial gravel area with seating. The chapel is served by it's own driveway and large parking area accessed via a five bar gate from the main road. A gravel path leads from the parking area to the chapel entrance. The Old Chapel is in the hamlet of Fenny Bridges which is situated between Ottery St.Mary and Honiton. The Greyhound Country Inn, just a five-minute walk away, is a delightful pub-restaurant in the hamlet featuring a thatched roof, oak beams and a wonderful beer garden. The location is ideal for exploring some of the wonderful places Devon has to offer, with Exeter, Sidmouth, Exmouth, and Topsham around 25 minutes by car. There are also a number of fantastic walks nearby – just ask us for any assistance and we will be happy to provide you with details of places to suit your requirements, whether its woodland, coastline or heaths you’re after. The national parks of Exmoor and Dartmoor make a wonderful day out and the famous Jurassic coast is just 25 minutes by car featuring, the beautiful beaches at Lyme Regis, Branscome and Budleigh Salterton. There is a train station approximately a mile and a half away, in Feniton, with frequent trains into Exeter, and a number of bus services departing nearby. For a supplement of £20 per rod per day, guests can enjoy private fly-fishing on the River Otter. You will have sole access to the full stretch of river between the bridges. This stretch of the river has the advantage of rocks and eddies with plenty of overhanging trees and bushes as well as open water to varying depths. There is small distributary with still pools, whilst the mainstem has fast flowing shallows and deeper waters as it approaches the weir. The river is known to have brown trout, sea trout and the occasional salmon. Please note that the close season is between 1st October and 14th April.
